Welcome to the home of soloism

AdventureBegins

All across Australia you can hear the buzz of spare rooms and garages being transformed into home offices. Since 2005, Flying Solo has supported this army of individuals who turn their backs on traditional careers to create a new way of living and working. Join the community.

Driven by potent forces like connected technology, waning job security, globalisation, the rise of project work and a thirst for lifestyle, more and more people are choosing to spread their wings and fly solo.

Once considered the poor cousin of a proper job, participants in this soloism movement now command respect and admiration. Previously the preserve of a small band of young audacious entrepreneurs, we have now firmly infiltrated the mainstream.

Today, the Australian Bureau of Statistics puts the number of solo and micro businesses operating locally at around 1.8 million, making up over 70% of the total small business sector. And the stampede to soloism continues to gather pace. Flying Solo is home to 85,000+ Australian business owners, along with 40,000 others connecting across our social networks.

"An invasion of armies can be resisted, but not an idea whose time has come."

- Victor Hugo

Soloist, independent professional, business owner, freelancer, lifestyle entrepreneur, moonlighter, contractor, free agent, gun for hire … whatever label you choose, you'll find members of our community at the forefront of every industry.

Amongst us you'll find business advisors, mentors, virtual assistants, yoga instructors, designers, landscapers, writers, photographers, tradies, health practitioners, cleaners, finance consultants, architects, social media gurus, brokers, real estate agents and many more.

We're strongly represented across all industries including tourism, training, retail, marketing, finance, hospitality, technology, food, beauty, fashion, engineering, building, public relations and media.

And we love our work! Flying Solo's Understanding micro business survey found that a resounding 85% are happy in their ventures, with lifestyle factors such as flexibility and autonomy being the biggest benefits. What's more, soloists enjoy household incomes higher than the Australian average.

“A man is a success if he gets up in the morning and gets to bed at night, and in between he does what he wants to do.”
