The local introduce yourself thread

Hi all,

I've managed to glean what most Canberran's here do via the few local threads we have and thought it would be good to have a dedicated 'about us' thread.

My name is Jason Marriott and my business is Power Protect.

As of mid February 2010 Power Protect has been in business for 3 months. The business is focused on service and repair of Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) and offers a range of products that are associated with the infrastructure around business IT requirements such as UPS, racks, and power distribution.

I come from an electrical background and previously worked as a service engineer for one of the multinational UPS companies. I started the business because I believe that there are too many companies out there with poorly maintained protection systems, and my previous employer was pushing for me to do extensive interstate travel because they didn't have enough (overpriced) work to do locally.

With a young family I wasn't prepared to do all the travel, so here I am......flying solo.

Nice meeting you here. I am from Canberra as well, and like yourself, I have only just started my business recently, and it's 3 months old too.

Some introduction about my company, Bean IT Pty Ltd. We based in canberra, providing web design and IT solutions to all types of businesses at affordable prices. Kevin from Solid Data here. We have been a Canberra based IT business for almost 10 years. We were once an IT support provider to small businesses also, but now solely focussed on backup and DR solutions (for SMEs and non-profits).

Great to have a couple more members join our little local group.

My story is that I work 4 days per week in the day job (IT Consultant). I also have a couple of part-time businesses that are linked in my signature.

As well as all that I have a few other ideas on the boil and get need to get a bit of time to get them out there!

I run a leadership development company - training and coaching and lots of article writing - called Inner Compass, since 2002. I am originally Canadian and yes - I am darn proud we beat the USA in the hockey in the Olympics to win GOLD! Yay!

Nice to know there are some local FS folks about!

Business in Canberra is pretty good. I find if you can get a handle on the whole small business advice ecosystem that operates in Canberra, it makes it easier to come up with a point of difference.

Hi All,
I have switched from being a fulltime graphic designer (on maternity leave) doing freelance design/art/photography to a part-time mother revving up the freelance work to be (eventually) a fulltime business, called fadstudios in partnership with my spouse Rob Riley.
I do mostly print work, focusing on logos, business cards and other corporate id, brochures, books, banners, posters, but have also done multimedia (director/flash), illustrations and even photography/photomanipulation. And now that I have done my website I'm looking at getting more work web-wise too. Because I come from an "artier" background I bring a bit more of an "arty" sensibility to my design work.
Perhaps I am diversifying myself a bit too much but I do like a bit of variety!
