Default Mobile version

Hi

I don't see any sign of a mobile version of flying solo - I assume there isn't?

It's not very iPad friendly - I'm on the forums right now on one. Your stats will tell you if it's necessary or not, bunt I for one would love to see a mobile version.

Cheers
Arvind

I doubt this off-the-shelf open source forum software has a mobile friendly version

Cheers,
Iain

And indeed, this forum is running vBulletin but the app is just for vBulletin's own forums. From the reviews:

"Want to read vBulletin's OWN forum - then get this app. The new owners of vBulletin would love to have you REGISTER to their own FORUM. In their world, it's all about the views, registered users and ad rotations... "

Cheers,
Iain

Hi Arvind and Iain,
Thanks for being part of the community and for your feedback. We've been looking at mobile options more seriously over the last year or so - particularly for the forum - there are a couple of plugins (for example tapatalk and forum runner) that we've looked at. vBulletin are also working on a native version I've read recently. A mobile version of the site for smartphones, iPad etc is also on the wishlist.

They say 2011 will definitely be the 'year of mobile'. Although I also recall reading that in 2009 and 2010. But yes, use of mobile devices is clearly taking off so we want to take the time to get a solution that works long-term.

So stay tuned... In the meantime, as always, we're very open to ideas and suggestions around mobile.

Thanks again,
Peter

I'm surprised they've taken so long to get this up and running a lot of the other popular forum scripts had this feature released last year.

Yeah i wouldn't expect anything to be released until the end of 2011 at the latest, there's always a long period after the advertised release date of where sorry we had to push it back due to finding some bugs haha. Obviously it would be worth waiting though

I'm curious - can't this be simply done with a stylesheet at the very least - perhaps at a subdomain like m.flyingsolo.com.au?

I don't think it would be that simple. The reply functionality, for example, uses some form of in-browser rich-text editor which probably wouldn't run on most mobile handsets.

If you just want to *read* the forums on your mobile there appears to be an RSS feed associated with it (although having not actually tried it out I'm not sure how useful that would be - just thought I'd throw it in the mix).

Cheers,
Iain

Just for another view, I look at FS on my iPhone easily when away from the office. I can't see why I would need another version. I just zoom in and zoom out.

So, I'm not worried about it. I'm also much happier seeing normal websites properly on my iPhone. I don't like the shortened versions for mobiles. I guess I'm happy enough the way it is. Cheers.

PS Just don't use Flash.
