Default New posts button

Not quite sure what is happening here but thought I might make comment about this issue so you could have a look at it and tell me if my gut feeling is correct.

I like to use the New Posts button on the top menu to check what threads are active. But a funny thing seems to happen in the course of 24 hours. The resulting list of threads usually includes ones that have not been updated recently and since my last click. Then at about 11.00am or midday suddenly the list shortens considerably to include only those threads since then.

In other words it just doesn't seem to be searching/sorting the way it should.

Also, the Today's Posts button under Quick Links - what day should it be listing? Should it be the last 24 hours?

Hi Peppie,

As this functionality is built into the forum software, we don't always know all the specifics of the programming, however this is my understanding of these two function:

Today's Post - this lists all posts that have been updated in the last 24 hours.

New Posts - this should list threads/posts that have been updated since your last visit to the forum. There is a built-in time limit to this of 10 days or so.

This seems to work ok for me but not sure if others are having problems too.

For a lot more options and specific search features you can also use the Forum Search at http://www.flyingsolo.com.au/forums/search.php

Hope that helps!
Cheers
Peter

Just swinging back to this one for a mo.

Not necessarily suggesting that you change anything, but it's more that something doesn't quite work the way it should and if you are interested to look into it.

I normally sign in first thing in the morning and leave it signed in until I log off at the end of the day. What I notice with the New Posts button is that first up it will list posts right though since some time the night before, possibly since the last time I logged on with my laptop the night before. The list will stay similarly populated no matter how many times I click the New Posts button.

At about 11am each morning the contents of the list changes to posts only made since about 11am and all new posts during the rest of that day will remain on the list in post time order.

So, the idea that it is a New Posts list is not quite right. Ok, so I could go and click Todays Posts under Quick Links, but that is one extra button click - and at times I am a bit lazy!!!

Hi Peppie

Thanks for taking the time to explain your experiences so fully. We will indeed investigate. It make take us a few days as Peter has rather selfishly taken a holiday ;)

Now that sounds nice Robert - perhaps we could all take a laptop and join Peter and his family on his holiday? Sunny sands instead of blistery cold winds at home sounds a good idea. :) :)

If everyone went on holiday with Peter, I'm sure he would rather stay at home!!!

Robert/Peter, for what it's worth, I have been away for a couple of days (taking a very quick break away from the mainstream of electronic communication) and on checking the forum tonight via the New Posts button I find that the oldest on the list was posted 2 days ago. So it must only reset late in the morning when I am actually online and signed in.

Hi Peppie,

In a bid to get to the bottom of this, I got in touch with the people who manage the back end of the forums. Their response was as follows:

Quote:
We have already checked the forum, and well, everything seems to be
working just fine on our end. This could be a browser issue though, maybe
they should try clear their browser's cookies/cache. We'll look into this
issue again and investigate more.

Please kindly let us know also if there are other users who are having the
same problem.
So... it may be worth checking your cookies (mmm...coookies) and in the meantime we'll keep an ear to the ground to see if others experience the same thing.

Sam
