BookKeeper hourly rate / hours per month

    Hi All,

    I'm interested to know if people get someone else in for their bookkeeping as I'm thinking of going down this path. If you do, how much do you pay per hour and roughly how many hours do they need per month? and if you are a book keeper, how much do you charge?

    Hi Seb,

    There are many great advantages in handing your bookkeeping to a professional, it frees up your time to concentrate on growing your business, winning new customers and serving your existing customers. They should also save you money in acting proactively in your interest.

    A word of warning however, make sure you are getting that qualified, professional service and they are also a registered BAS agent. Getting the right person is very important, more important than just the rate per hour as a lesser person could lose you more in unclaimed GST, result in your accountant spending more time not less at the year end or more serious problems.

    Mark has it pretty clear - outsourcing non core activities is a way to grow your business as it frees up time for you to do core activities. Also strongly agree with making sure they are qualified and registered.

    Bookkeeping - unless you are good at it or really enjoy it should be one of the first activities outsourced and a good bookkeeper will be able to help you with concise information or reports so that you are clear of your financial position on a month by month basis. Too many small business owners use their bank balance as their only indicator which is not ideal.

    Rates would depend on where you’re located and the level of bookkeeping required.

    Thanks for the responses guys, a few people have suggested I use elance/odesk and outsource o/s, I've got my opinion, but I'd be interested to hear your professional view on why this might not be such a good idea!

    In reply Seb, I'm happy to help but I wouldnt go down the route of passing your bookkeeping to anyone that hasnt got the basic qualifications and who isnt familar with your circumstances and you havent had a chance to meet or talk to at depth.

    Bookkeepers are many and varied, as are the rates we charge. The old adage you get what you pay for doesn't always apply. In my experience bookkeepers charging $20/hr are not who you should be using. Those with higher rates around $50-$70/hr are more often than not much more qualified and able to offer more than just bookkeeping. More and more bookkeepers have tiered fees or alternatively have fixed fees for "packaged" services.

    Look at it as an opportunity to get your own internal accountant as well as a bookkeeper. If you invest in the right bookkeeper they will be an asset to you business. I'd suggest getting someone who will work with you and lsiten to your needs. Don't be pushed into doing things how they want with no input from yourself. Communication is imperative.

    We charge $75/hr most small businesses we do the books for are paying us from $150 /QTR to $300 / Month although we do have some larger business where we do a lot of work including a lot of strategic work that are paying in excess of $4000 per month.

    We can also agree on a regular payment plan that includes all of your bookkeeping, BASs and annual Tax work. This generally works out well as you have the certainty of your accounting and bookkeeping bills.

    TBH I think they're a waste of time, I've tried several of these types of site and found employers weren't prepared to pay a fair rate for the service they expected. Plus you're competing against people offering to do the work for $2 an hour in some cases, madness!

    Re elance etc

    Im sure you can get a great rate for someone to do your basic books for you if thats all thats required

    A good book keeper can save you money because he will give insight into your business as well as saving you money with the tax accountant at the end of the year

    Have a read of Heathers article on the homepage and substitute word book keeper :)
