After working with some offshore developers I am about to throw myself out a window but before I do I thought I would try here first.

I am looking for a developer to make some styling changes to my Wordpress website. It's about 1-2 hours worth and if all goes well I'd love to continue working with you on some other websites I have.

I am looking for someone that can do the work for me urgently, preferably yesterday :)

Please can you PM me your hourly rate and your Skype so I can show you what needs to be done.

    Thanks

    Where are you - town/city?

You may find it useful to start your search with someone nearby.

All these old Wordpress threads re opened.

A better strategy would be to engage with Wordpress threads as they are actually happening.

    Matthew,

AWESOME POST.. to add, i must say that i thought the term URGENT (as OP states 'yesterday') would not mean to offer assistance 8 weeks or so later :)

    Cheers
    Jason

ps.. Matthew, may i also add that this method may actually impeach upon any opportunity that the posters refreshing said threads are trying to gain!

And their website has one of those auto scroll to next content section on mouse wheel javascripts that work horribly on mac touch pads.. means they couldn't be real developers who use mac's or they would of picked that up

Certainly Matthew, yes it was oldish, but there was no indication on this thread if it had been resolved.

Happy to engage as they happen going forwards.

    Hi Keith

Valid point.. After a while you will see that not everyone comes back to close posts :( and the threads to just disappear of the list unless searched out :)

Think this is why refreshing old posts is a little bit of a sore spot for most regulars on FS, especially considering most people that tend to refresh an old post are doing so purely for self promotion - which actually isnt even allowed in a direct fashion as per FS rules.. (ps no finger pointing here, just observations and advice)..

Look forward to seeing you around mate.

    Jason

Who ever you pick CharlieBean, make sure they are coding specialists. I have just had a website built by someone (not of my choosing but business partner) who made the design changes stick to the base canvas by using a lot of -!important-

Being just a regular normal business person, I have only just discovered this very important flaw by hours of Google diving as we are now coming into compatibility issues.
What ever you do, don't use the company that we used - for the love of sanity - don't

    To System Admin,
Valid point raised about no date listed when the thread was started.

I've been caught out this way.

It would be a useful addition to the thread header.

    Hey John,
Hope all is well. While not necessarily jumping out, the date is listed in the black bar at the top of each thread - is that what you mean?

With much older threads we also have an alert that pops up to alert people that the thread is old to make sure they still want to post, which helps legit posters. Although that wouldn't have kicked in this this case.

    Cheers,
    Peter

    Hi Peter,
    Meanwhile back at the ranch...

4 years and 1,700+ posts later and I had not noticed that.

About time to recheck my glasses prescription?

Actually, it does say something about our eye habits when viewing web pages.

    Many thanks,
    JohnW

Out of curiosity, how does using the !important tag affect compatibility?

Haha! After that many posts and replies I'm surprised we haven't sent you cross-eyed :) We're working on freshening things up around the place soon(ish) so hopefully we can clean things up a little visually and functionally.

    I'm with Matt,
    What's with the "!...." code?

I thought <!...> was code for descriptive information that SEs did not read.

I don't understand where this figures in the discussion.

Have I misunderstood what coding was involved? Have I missed some coding upgrade?

!important is used in CSS to override the standard cascading hierarchy and have a rule that overrides (considered more important) than the rule that would otherwise apply. Definitely useful but if overused can be messy to maintain and could lead to bad structure and in turn performance. Not sure of any compatibility issues though and as far as I'm aware has been part of the standard since 1.0, although IE6 didn't support it.

I know this comment (quoted) isn't having a dig at using Canvas, but I just wanted to clarify for anybody that might get confused.

Under the right guidance, using a skeleton theme like Canvas as the base of a website (WordPress or otherwise) is highly recommended.

Provided your developer understands how to work in harmony with the theme (through child theming etc), there are substantial savings and technology benefits from using this methodology.
