I have heard that business grants are very difficult to come by? Can anyone relate their experiences?

I work with government grants on a daily basis. For start ups they are very hard. Most typically you need to show a track record. Giving out grants is a lot like getting a loan from the bank - they are very risk adverse.

The only real start up grants are the ones provided by the city of melbourne.

John is correct, State Governments are better for small business grants and often local councils are better still (e.g City of Melbourne)

The link by stillainjel was a reference to a US website so some of the commentary is not exactly relevant.

The availability of government grants is dependent on industry, stage of development, financial viability etc. If people post more specific information about a particular business I can give specific advice about what grants would be available.
