Hi someone was nice enough to tell me that i may be able to applyfora government grant as a small business. does anyone know what kind of government grants there are and how much money i may get to help my small business?

You may be eligible for the NEIS New Enterprise Incentive Scheme is you are unemployed. Do a google search and you will find some info on it. Not sure what else.

Hi, I had also been told there are "heaps" of grants going for small businesses.

I asked about grants at a start up workshop on the Sunshine Coast here with the Dept of Tourism, Regional Devt and Industry and was told they always get asked that and no, there are none.

Can't help asking though.

Generally the state governments are the main source of grants. Have a look at your Business Department for your state government and see what they have going.

also try contacting Aus Industry on 13 28 46 or www.ausindustry.gov.au - they offer grants and tax and duty concessions and might have something relevant.

When I was in South Australia I had heard that there were grants for small businesses starting out, but when I researched it in Brisbane I could not find one at the time of research... so yeah, probably state government as others have suggested.

Unfortunately there are no free lunches. You only get a government grant if you are going to do something with it, like employ a consultant to do a business plan, or attend trade show overseas. There will always be an out of pocket. Most fund only a % of your spend, typically 30% - 75%.

As a general rule there are no grants for pure start ups - you need to show a track record of sales. The companies that get the grants are the ones who dont need it (ie sales growth, profit, exporting etc)

I believe you can get grants for a specific industry like science and technology. The government may also favor certain places to set up the industry which are not economically sound.
