Default GST & Purchasing for Schools

I've been asked to source some new computer hardware for some schools in my area (Victoria).

Please correct me if I'm wrong here, but from what I understand, schools don't pay GST.

Not having purchsed on behalf of anyone who doesn't have to pay GST before, what's the procedure?

When I buy the gear from my supplier, do I need to supply the supplier with a number or code to identify the school as a legitimate GST free purchser? Or does the school pay the GST and claim it back just like everyone else?

I'll be buying on behalf of the school and reselling it to them.

Thanks for any help.

Hi Siringo

Like the rest of us schools pay GST. However education services are generally exempt from GST. So a school would be registered for GST and thus claim the credits when lodging their BAS like everyone else

Makes things a lot easier for the seller not like the good old days pre GST
