Hammock Comfort for Australia!

Hi there, I'm Mike and with my Sydney based friend Guy we have started up a online sales store selling hand-woven Mexican hammocks, blankets and scarves.


I had the idea after spending 5 months roadtripping around Mexico and testing out a fair few hammocks! Upon my return I thought a bit of extra hammock comfort was necessary for Australia.

I think your hammocks are a fab idea. I recently came back from Mexico and loved sleeping, eating and chillin' in the hammocks there!

I would love to have one here now that I am back but I have no space to hang one

Hi Liz,

thanks for that! Yeah Mexico is such a great country to travel around. So much to see and do, and so different to Australia, is really a great experience being there.

I love the hammocks, hence the business, and don't need any excuse to jump in mine for reading a book or just a nap or bit of day dreaming.

Well if you find somewhere to hang (can go indoors also..) you know where to find us! They also make great gifts (weddings etc, shameless plugging I know sorry!).

Yeah they would make a good gift- excellent idea. You don't see too many people receiving a hammock for an engagement or wedding present. Not like with a toaster, cutlery... No weddings on the horizon for me but when one comes along i know where to head.

Hi Mike I too have lived in Mexico ( about 4 years ) mainly in Oaxaca. I have a friend in UK called Joel also selling hammocks (http://www.hammocks.co.uk/). He has been doing it for about 2o years now so sure he has lots of tips. He sells the beautiful hammocks you have but also sells stands for them. You should have a word with him and see if you cant do something together. I can introduce you if you want.

wow, that's cool! I love Oaxaca state, I've spent a lot of time on the beaches there, and the city itself is so beautiful and fun to spend time in.

Yeah that'd be great I'd love to have a word with you friend. I'm sure he has lots of great experience. I know I've sent hammocks to the UK and I'm sure he's sent ones here, so yeah definitely we could perhaps work together or help each other out with certain things. Would be interested to know about his stands aswell, as we are having a bit of trouble sourcing quality ones.

Hi Mike, Yes Oaxaca ia a beautiful city and as I said I was based there for a bout 4 years ( with spells in Guatemala ). I know your hammocks well and travelled with one in my bag which was essential in my day as many places I stayed only had hooks instead of beds. Did you ever go to Zipolite beach? I will contact my friend in UK but he takes a few days to reply usually. When he began his business we used to travel to all the big festivals like Glastonberry, Reading Rock Festival etc and he would have a stand and would sell tons of the hammocks. I dont know Sydney too well but here in Brisbane on the South Bank they have a market every Fri Sat Sun and to get a stand there is very cheap - I think about $70 for the weekend. In the summer loads of tourists pour through plus a lot of Ozzies and would be a great place to set up. If you had a mobile EFtPOS / Credit card machine and paid someone $200 a day to man the stand Im sure you would sell loads. They are fantastic hammocks - you lie more sideways on them dont you. Might even be able to help you with that if you dont want to travel to Brisbane every weekend. Im fairly sure he hasnt sent any out here as he was trying to get me to do it at one stage but I was too busy with my own business. Sure you have such places in Sydney too.
By the way my friend has the stands made to order and also has kits for hanging them in doors in your bedroom etc.

Hi Andy, wow that is cool. I would love to do a 1/2 year in each country in the future. Avoid winter altogether if possible.

I did go to Zipolite, and I had a lot of trouble leaving. No problems, it was just such a beautiful relaxed place that I ended up staying there 2 1/2 months. I had a car so would make trips north and south surfing along the coast, but always returned to a nice little place in Zipolite.

I think we will look more into the Sydney markets come summer, I know they are really busy and popular also, so hopefully would do well.

I had a look at your friends site also, and say his stands, they look great. I think custom made is probably the way to go, ensures we get something really good.

sorry Mike Im still waiting for reply from UK. Either he is away or too much time in Mexico has instilled the 'manana' attitude in him. As you probably know in Mexico they say " 'manana' doesn't mean tomorrow - it means not today"
