Default What is the opposite of commodity?

Hello there,

I am wondering what the term is for the opposite of commodity, and figured someone here might know. Google spat out a whole bunch of useless answer sites...with no real answers...even the dictionary kind of places didn't know...

I figured maybe it would be speciality or differentiated, but not sure, that doesn't seem quite right.

Thanks for any thoughts!

I found this through a thesaurus, under one of the synonyms for commodity, being product.

Main Entry: product
Part of Speech: noun
Definition: result or goods created
Antonym: resource

What do you think?

Actually, I did see that one in the Google...but it didn't sound right!

I mean it makes sense...but trying to use in context of a sentence I don't know if regular joe would pick up what it meant...

E.g. Do you sell a resource? Do you sell a commodity?

Hmm maybe

These all sound correct....but....like resource, I find them hard to use in a sentence that people would understand...

E.g. Do you sell a special product? Do you sell a boutique product? Do you sell a commodity product?

Hmm actually now I write that, some of those come out ok

Thanks guy/gal

Being that the definition of a commodity is:

com·mod·i·ty/kəˈmäditē/
Noun:
A raw material or primary agricultural product that can be bought and sold, such as copper or coffee.
A useful or valuable thing, such as water or time.

I would make the assessment that the opposite would be more along the lines of:

Something that could not be bought or sold and perhaps isn't useful or valuable.

Also, I own a horse.

If the context is that you are conveying a particular product in a market not a commodity (ie it's unique) then how about "nonhomogeneous". Might be hyphenated.

Its a fairly technical description (perhaps too technical) but I remember it from the uni economics days when learning pricing theory. Lecturers love their Eco babble.

Hi John

To the average Joe 'a commodity' is a staple product that is price sensitive.

If that is true then perhaps the opposite is 'a luxury'
