Default YOUR disaster plan

I too cannot bear the devastation and loss in Vic and Qld.

The news made my partner and I really assess what we would need to pack up if under threat. I am a photographer, but wouldnt be rescuing my cameras, too bulky, too replaceable. I would take my portable hard drive back up discs. They contain my entire backlog of 5 years in business. They take seconds to unplug, and i can carry them out. I back up more often now than ever.

With these i would be able to replace my clients' precious photos if they were unfortunate enough to lose them. Give them any photos of loved ones lost. With these I could re-build and re-establish anywhere in no time.

These events have made me look more seriously about getting an online database, NOW.

What do you have to do now to fire & flood proof your business?

Stay and protect? NO WAY. Protect now and make it portable if at all possible. Insure, insure, insure.

Please think about it, and post YOUR disaster plan to help others.

What a great idea. I intend to give this some thought.

Greg Pritchard wrote an article a few weeks ago what had some fine tips - Nine ways to disaster-proof your business.

My son bought me an external hard drive for fathers day last year. Whats this for? A back up dad for everything you value on your computer.
Interesting. You know what this is the most valuable possecion I own, well i dont own my wife she owns me....I think.... but owning this piece of equipment means that anything I want to protect on my computer I back up on this external hard drive. If you havent got one get one, if you have one and dont use it as a backup system then seriously think about what you have on your computer that cant be replaced.
Thanks wowphotos.

I know these things are inexpensive other wise I would not have got one for fathers day.

My backup/disaster recovery plan is always developing. But at the present my main backups are on 2 identical 1TB drives that connect straight into my network. They each have identical copies of critical archives and system backups are spread over the 2 drives.

My intention is to place those drives in 2 physically separate buildings, the backups of computers in 1 building will will be on the drive in the other.

The kind of file sizes I deal with make an online storage solution a bit impractical. I am thinking of looking at a bank vault type of solution for storing actual physical copies of archives and backups. The idea as wowphotos says is to not loose your business and client archives plus the assets your business depends on. All of that and the ability to get up and running again quickly should the worst happen.

My parents had a flood in their office before Christmas 2006 & the first thing they did was put the external hard drive in a plastic bag and sent it home with me while they dealt with the water - everything else, they didn't worry about.

For me, I'd grab my computer (external hd is is on my list of things to buy) and photos, and the kids!

If you're thinking now's a good time to make sure your business is prepared for the worst, use our risk management plan.
Back up your business records (TAX, transactions) and data onto another medium such as an external hard drive, DVD and potentially a reasonable flash drive.

Two of everything is where digital wins over physical paper records hands down.

Take photos of your current home possessions and scan receipts to record their ownership.

My sister was intelligent enough to have scanned our family images and put onto disk as gifts for her other siblings.

Place the backup duplication in another distant residence especially if you work from home where you can trust the Intellectual property. In an ideal situation you will enable a smooth relatively uninterrupted means of revenue to get you back on your feet.

You were born with two eyes, ears, nostrils to safeguard loss against one.

A well laid out back up strategy works on the same principle.

A good strategy leaves you a better chance of keeping more than your physical being.
