Default I survived the Melbourne Earthquake ... Where were you?

Weird ... about 9pm on Friday the house shook a couple of times ... I said to my partner "What was that?!?!" - we live near a highway and the last time I felt that kind of a shake, a semi-trailer had gone off the road and hit the abandoned hotel down the road.

A few minutes later I got phone calls from friends (not to mention HUNDREDS of notes on Twitter!) - everyone across Melbourne had felt it ... so I checked the US geological site ... 4.7 on the richter scale! That's pretty impressive! Especially since no one got hurt ...

There's a few people around whispering about the 'end of days' - heat, bushfires, cold, earthquakes ...

At the same time we had ours, there was one in Greenland and a Tsunami in Russia ...

Crazy stuff!

About that time, Nat, age 7, complained his bed was shaking! I didn't feel anything & thought he was being difficult so told him to get back to bed - then I heard about it on the news this morning!

Hi Leela

I heard it on the radio last night .. and I was just talking to a friend a few days ago ( a geologist) who told me that there are "no earthquakes in Australia" as there are no continental plates colliding around the continent, the Newcastle earthquake having been a result of the mining.
I have to ask him what he says now.

Glad that nothing worse happened, Victoria had it's share this year.

We were wondering the same thing Astrid!

Apparently the epicenter was out near Gippsland?

It seems VERY weird and random! I'll be interested to find out exactly what happened ...Article here, but no explanation ...

Where was I ???? in Sydney, didn't feel anything here, in fact feeling quite settled and reasonably stable today.

Haven't had any earthquakes around here for a while. We even survived the Newcastle earthquake of about 12 years (I think) ago. It was close though, we were about 1km from the epicenter the day before.

No earthquakes in Australia! I was about to mention the Newcastle quakes too - my uncle, aunt & cousins were affected by those.

Nat didn't understand what an earthquake was when I told him about it today!

Yes, but they reckon Newcastle was man made ... to do with instability due to mining.

It's actually really random ... there were THREE earthquakes at the SAME time in different areas of a country that can't physically HAVE earthquakes.

Something weird is going on ...

My first thought was, 'What earthquake?' I wonder what I was doing at the time, but I didn't notice a thing.

It must be the fault of global warming.
