Default How do you get food products featured in Magazines

Hi there,

I was just wondering if anyone had any advice on getting their product featured in food magazines like Delicious, Donna Hay, Gourmet Traveller types etc.

I have seen in Delicious they have a section called 'Foodiefile' where new to the market products are featured. It doesn't appear to be done that way via paid adviertising as such but then I could be wrong.

Is it about being ballsy and giving them a call and then follow up by sending samples of your product to them or is it done through other formal methods like food shows, trade shows and festivals etc ... or is it more about just dumb luck that someone who works there happened to stumble over a product and liked it enough to want to mention it?

Or is it simply that to get in there at all is only via paid advertising?

thanks

Robyn

I would suggest hiring a PR person - they're not as expensive as you think. I'm quite impressed with what mine has managed in a short period of time for a reasonable outlay. I'm using The Soho Agency and Sophie and Rachel have been fab to work with.

Hi Robyn,

I tried to find your product online to get a better idea of what you would like published, but I couldn't find anything.

My name is Phoebe Netto and I use marketing and PR to help small businesses grow.

The coverage that you are referring to is not advertising. Rather it is editorial that they have received (most likely through a PR agency such as mine). There are DIY aspects to getting media coverage, however you have a far greater chance of coverage if you hire a PR agency. Also, a PR agency knows how the media works and how to get the best coverage that is in the most ideal section of the magazine and best portrays your product.

I'd be happy to discuss this with you further. My contact details are here www.goodbusiness.net.au

Have a Happy New Year!

-Phoebe

Hi Phoebe,

Thanks for your response.

My website has only just gone up and is currently just a static splashpage until I can get some more funds and it's actually under the name of my product not my company which is :- www.lushies.com.au

It's very early days for me just yet as I am stil in the launch phase and probably a little premature for me to be going down the full PR route just at the moment, but was just interested for down the track.

It might be better timing for me to get back in touch with you when I get a bit more established in a few months time if that's ok with you?

Cheers

Robyn

Hi Robyn (and thanks Sal for the mention).
The best way to get into magazines is via PR - you can do this in a number of ways. If you want to do this yourself then you would need to compile a list of media outlets and the contact details and keep the contact person up to date as they do change quite regularly. You would then need to put together a media release highlighting anything topical or newsworthy about your product that might catch the editor's eye. You would then send this out with a sample of your product and follow up a few days later with a phone call. Magazines receive free samples on a regular basis so you would need to do something to make it stand out if possible - either maybe in the packaging or the method you use to send it. It would then be important for you to keep in regular contact with the media contact and maybe every month or two give them a call. The other option is to hire a PR agent - as Sal mentioned we have some great packages for all budgets and Rachel has huge experience in that area and has had some amazing results for our clients. The benefit of using a PR agent is that they already have established contacts within the media and often it is a relationship that has been built up over a number of years.
Hope that gives you some insight. Feel free to drop me a line if you have any questions.

Good luck with your business!

Hi Robyn,

That is not a problem at all.

Feel free to get in touch when you feel your business is ready for more exposure. Sounds very exciting.

Cheers,
