Facebook advertising, does it work? Any experiences?

I wonder whether the different responses reported in this thread may have something to do with what people see when they click on the ads?

I believe I've seen other posts by MsLily where she talks about the special offers and discounts she promotes on her Facebook page.

Discounts, freebies and competitions seem to be central issues to success on Facebook. You would also need to ensure people can claim them easily.

Could these be the reasons for such variable responses?
