I'm quite sure that Vista Print offer a range of qualities. The free items that we've received don't have Vista Print on them. The cheap business cards we got when we first started out were of average quality, but then we paid peanuts and as such didn't have high expectations. We've since got much nicer ones which look great but cost far more. But for a startup, tight on budget I'd say get the $40 ones, and if you're not happy with them get some nicer ones when you can.

Obviously thousands of people disagree given the volume Vistaprint do, but to me business cards isn't something you skimp on totally because it leaves such a bad impression. You don't need to go super heavy stock or special finishes, but at least get a minimum quality card - the vista print ones look home made! Spending $5 or $30 or whatever with Vistaprint vs maybe $90 with another cheap online printer, well to me the answer is obvious simply because I have never seen another printer do cards that poor quality, no matter the price.

Maybe it's just me but if I ever get handed a vistaprint card from someone my initial though it: Ok, so you aren't a "real" business then. If it was a plumber I might put it down to ignorance and use them anyway if they seemed ok, but for anyone in business services I would never hire them, ever.

And YES, you can tell a Vistaprint card a mile off due to the poor paper quality, undersized style, often dull looking print, and almost always a poor quality generic design.

ok so, since we're talking about flyer printing costs.

I want 100, A4, full colour, double sided, 140gsm gloss, flyers printed.

Ideally, I'd like to see a single test-print first (add it to the volume if you want.)

Any soloists got a cost for me.. ?

Yeah, went ahead. Was happy with everything, although they printed it double side by mistake, when actually I only paid for single side. But that is fine.

Good idea, in theory! But unfortunately no amount of good design can fix bad quality printing. Good to hear you're happy with the results anyway.

Whoops!! Aside from the double printing issue, how would you rate the print quality and paper? ie. does it look like a $40 job, or better (..or worse)?

I agree with what you say here, although I think people get into the trap with vistaprint.... they start off with the free cards, maybe as a trial run but then after being bombarded with special ‘free’ offers, they stick with them for all future print... they can cover all your small business needs and it is true, they do service a need in the market...

However, I personally think that it stops people thinking about what else is out there, stops them requesting samples... feeling the difference in quality and comparing price, apples for apples, digital v offset. There is that assumption that anywhere else will be expensive...

The bottom line is, in a lot of cases a far superior card, flyer etc can be sourced elsewhere for the same if not cheaper than the price you will pay with them. It does pay to shop around and compare.

I'm sure we all make judgements based on the appearance of a business card, in the same manner as we do with a persons general appearance, and whatever else, and perhaps some take these matters more seriously than others, indeed more seriously than they ought to. But at the end of the day the selection of the quality of a business card is quite often determined by budget. Sure a more expensive business card would look better and thereby be better, as we found out ourselves, but for a new business budget is of paramount importance, so spending less quite often makes a lot of sense, even if that means that you deny yourself the opportunity of sporting egg shell, romalian type BCs'.

Hey Camel,

I may be a little late to the party, but we can do those flyers for $92. Unfortunately for that volume it's not financially feasible to do a hard copy proof (the test print) first, but if you order I can get customer service to send you a free soft proof via email.

You can customise that price here: http://australianqualityprinting.com...rinting/flyers

To everyone else,

This has been an interesting discussion, and to us online printers Vistaprint is the 8000 pound gorilla in the room. They can drive their prices down by printing lots of different print runs together on one press run (called gang running), and operating on a volume commodity basis. While their quality can suck, and their marketing can be nefarious at times, it's hard to argue with the worlds biggest online printer. The one thing going for us is that it's a crap-shoot going with Vistaprint, as you never know what quality you'll get, plus they don't do some Australian standard sizes (their business cards are European sizes, smaller than the standard Aussie 90x55mm cards).

If you're interested, we've gone into some of the other terms (like "gang running") and things to keep in mind when commercially printing in our infographic here: http://australianqualityprinting.com...rchasing-guide

Have a great day!

J
