Need help with facebook!

Hi everyone,

I have just scrolled through the facebook "like exchange" thread, and I like the idea of it but I need a bit of advice first.

I have run a Coaching/Consulting business with face-to-face clients for a fair few years now. I have only ever advertised locally and by word-of-mouth and that has provided me with more than enough clients to keep me going.

In the interest of longevity (and because I love to write) I have branched out online.

My only problem is, I have never cared much for social networking. As such, I am completely ignorant when it comes to Facebook. I created this page:

Is this a fan page? Or a Business Page? What's the difference?

I have put recommend buttons on the pages of my site, but they do not link to this page do they? They just show up on someone else's facebook page as "Person recommends this".

I don't like the idea of setting up a personal page, and I am afraid my lonely little business page will sit in the dark with 0 likes forevor unless I learn something about how to fix it or how to promote it.

I'd appreciate any advice...

You need 25+ likes before you can get a url to link to your website. I've started the ball rolling...you now need 24 more lol

I too am a bit ignorant as to the types of pages and best way to promote them.

Rather than have a 'recommend' link, (or as well as) you should be able to have a "Like" type link that will go straight to your F/B page for people to like your page. There's actually code within the setup part of your page that F/B provides to create the 'like' buttons. Or, even codes that will allow people to 'like' your page whilst at your website without having to even navigate over the Facebook.

Gossipism - just read your tips, thanks for sharing... From that I will be heading over to make a couple of changes to my F/B page. One question though that perhaps you can answer - is it still the case to get to 25 likes before having your own user name? I am not there yet but was able to edit my 'setting's so that you can go to facebook.com/mmwtrademarks (not referring to any ID # etc)...

Anyway - I look forward to reading further responses to this one!

it is last time i did one. (a month ago). there was a time when facebook let people get a vanity link with less users (i think it was 10) and i actually did a page where it let me.

then after a day or so, it wouldnt let people do it with that few likes. so i would say yes, its still in effect.

I believe you can still change it without needing 25 fans. I sent someone here yesterday and it worked for them with only a couple of fans.

Hi everyone,

You have no idea how helpful this has been! Many many thanks.

Overnight I have made a couple of changes:

- I found the like box to put on my site so it's now on the home page. Thanks to Wendi and Jacqui it doesn't look so bad (has 2 likes!).

- Found how to change the URL so it is now facebook.com/businessepiphany. I had to verify the account with a mobile number (I suppose cause I don't have 25 likes)

So now I can just start promoting the url a little more in my advertising activities. I'll get involved with the like exchange now (though not sure I am much of an exchange yet!).

I just have one last question...what is a fan page? Is that what I have already? If not, why would I make one? How would I make one? What are they used for?

One more thing...

Wendi, I went to your home page and then to your facebook link (to return the linking favour), but I could not find anywhere where I could press 'like this'. How do I do it?

Jacqui, I clicked on your 'like us on facebook' signature link and it just took me to my facebook homepage. Did my like show up or did I do something wrong?

I wish on my main facebook page it updated everytime I clicked on someone's 'like' box, such as - 'Business Epiphany likes Couple It'. Why doesn't it do this? Does it do it for anyone else, or is this just a personal facebook page thing?

Hi Rachel - thanks for bringing that to my attention - I have fixed up the link in my signature if you would like to try again? Would love to have you on board!

When you are logged into facebook personally and you go to your page - there should be a list down on the left hand side (below where your page tells you how many people have come by and 'liked it' that shows the various business pages you like. (Not sure if this helps in response to your "I wish on my main facebook page it updated everytime I clicked on someone's 'like' box, such as - 'Business Epiphany likes Couple It'.") - Plus it should show on your page's 'wall' that you have been over to another page and liked it..
