Hi Jacqui,
I've always found trade shows / biz stands to be the best when it comes to success rates for flyer hand-outs.
I do agree with Wendy though - in your business I suppose you need to get to people before they actually have the business (or product) up and running (whilst in process).
Forming relationships with designers, testers or manufacturing plants would be a great way to build your client base. Consider local breweries for example. Many of them contract manufacture for really small companies that are just considering going into the liquor market. They want to see what their product looks and tastes like, but haven't a clue on how to get the legal stuff done.
Don't concern yourself with getting rid of all of your fliers at once - just use them as something to leave behind when you have face to face meetings with potential "referrers". The office manager will file it away, but no doubt he/she will remember you and recommend your services if the situation arises (and probably go rifling through her cabinets saying "I know I put that flyer here somewhere!).
