Default Australian made, proudly Australian - questions

Hi everyone,

I would like to know:

- what wording do you prefer for Australian made goods:
- Australian made
- Australian owned
- 100% Australian
- Proudly Australian

or what else comes to mind?

- Does it stick out more as a logo or just the words?

- what are the regulations to use this on one's own products?

- does it still have some kind of attraction to customers?

- does it also have some kind of attraction to customers if you were to sell overseas?

It would be great to see many of you contribute and interesting to see what you think.

I look forward to your replies!

Regards,
Mel

"100% Australian made and owned" does it for me, so long as you can fit it all in.

I'm with Wendy. This tells me it's made in Australia and the profits stay here.

Otherwise it could be Australian-owned, but made off-shore which doesn't support Australian jobs; or made in Australia, but owned by overseas interests with profits not staying in Australia.

"100% Australian made and owned" is far more reassuring and appealing.

Hi Mel,

I agree with Wendy also.

As to 'regulations' for using such a term - first and foremost it has to be true! Otherwise you would be misleading and deceiving consumers, which is not allowed.

If you wanted to use an existing 'Australian Made' type logo - i.e. the 'famous' green triangle with the kangaroo in it - this is registered as a 'certification' trademark, which basically means that the owner has determined a list of rules and regulations that must be met in order to use the logo and you would need to meet certain criteria in order to use it - you can read more about this at http://www.australianmade.com.au/logo/

Generally speaking I think a logo would stand out more than text alone to grab people's attention, but having said that there are a certain amount of people that will only buy Australian so will look for this information whether it's in logo form or written form. I think there's still an attraction to buy Australian made - well, I know where viable I buy Australian made!

I don't think it would be offputting if you were to sell overseas to others - we have a lot of products available in Australia that come from other countries and people still buy them!

This. It covers all bases. Adding the word "family" in there can also be powerful.

I agree. Australian made and owned gets my nod. All the rest I regard as weasel words because the company is either foreign owned or the majority of the product is manufactured offshore... well actually I think you can still produce the 'majority' of the product offshore and still call it Australian made. Just requires some creativity.

I think 'Australian made from 100% Australian produce. Australian Owned' gets the golden seal of ticking all the boxes, but it just sounds ridiculous.
