Default Do you need to send a delivery docket/invoice?

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to work out if I am required to print out a copy of my customer's order to send with the goods?

I assume that would be a proof to show the customer that this is what they have ordered. But I can't see any other reason except it's a waste of paper *lol* I'm a big supporter of paperless.

Do you expect a copy of your order with the delivery? Does it need to be an invoice or can it be a delivery docket?

Anyway, looking forward to your thoughts.

Regards,
Mel

Hi Mel.

I would expect at least a delivery docket to check the order off against.

Keep in mind that the person receiving the goods is not always the same person who placed the order so there may be no way of knowing if the order is correct without some record.

I bought something online a couple of weeks ago and it arrived without any paperwork. I was a bit miffed at first lol, but then realised that I had an invoice which had been emailed to me at the time of order.

If you're going to print anything, I guess it may as well be an invoice.

This

If not an invoice, at least a packing slip so the person opening can immediately notify if something is missing.

Why not give your clients the option of either receiving an invoice via email or when they receive their order.

Few people expect paper invoices included with shipments these days - email is generally fine.

As for delivery dockets:
If you're sending single-item shipments to individuals then no.

If you're sending shipments to businesses, or with multiple items then include a delivery docket. This is absolutely essential if you part-ship orders so you can indicate the quantities shipped and quantities back-ordered.

As Ytelco noted, at all but the smallest companies, the person responsible for receiving incoming goods is often not the person who placed the order, so don't assume the person who opens the box is going to know what should be in it, or who to give it to. A delivery docket showing the customers purchase order number answers both these questions.

Cheers,

Michael
