yes it can be such a huge range of pricing really depending on what you are wanting to achieve.

We tend to take a two fold approach, a designer plus a web programmer to cut and bring the design to life.

On some level if you are using Word Press perhaps you only need the design elements by way of a theme as you mention.

Just adding to the chorus re wordpress. I'm a BIG fan of WP, but there is a wide variety of templates, ranging from very bad to very good.

I built my site using a free template because I needed something up quickly. I am now in the process of developing a new site, with a paid WP template that I am finding to be highly customisable without much html knowledge.

I got it through themeforest.com and it was developed by wpscientist. It's got a content composer and drop and drag options, plus you can customise to any colour palette etc

I'm loving it (although I must admit that if I didn't have basic HTML knowledge, as well as an vague understanding of what to do to customise colours according to the web equivalent of CYMK, I would struggle)

I look forward to getting my new site live for feedback from the wonderful designers here at FS!

Wordpress templates are fine to a point. But I can almost guarantee most businesses, if they rely on the interweb to gain leads/clients, that a website designed/developed by a web professional who actually knows their stuff (ie. usability, creating clear calls to action, optimum text lengths, focal points ... plus myriad of other elements) will almost always generate more leads/business than a generic template site.

People don't just pay money for a good site just because it "looks good".

Something to keep in mind.

It really depends on your needs. Having said that, spending a lot of money doesn't guarantee that you are going to get a top-notch website. I am a big fan of Wordpress, and use it for my site, which cost less than $500 to get up and running.

As other have said it really comes down to who designs it and what you need from it.

I approached a few web developers and I am going to settle with Ondetto (www.ondetto.com.au) who were significantly cheaper than the others and look to provide quality work.

If you're asking "How much does a website cost?", you're asking a good question. However, there is another question that will give you a more meaningful answer.

The better question is "How much will it cost me to own, operate and maintain my website?"

The initial cost of planning, designing and creating your website is only part of the equation.

You also need to consider the cost of your time (or the fees you will pay for outsourced skills) for ongoing website maintenance such as keeping your content up to date, or writing news items or blog posts. In addition, there will be other outgoings such as web hosting fees, and perhaps occasional technical support. Oh, and possibly the cost of replacing the whole thing in the future if you decide you're unhappy with it, or with your web designer or developer.

With websites, as anything else, you get what you pay for. An initial cheap outlay is not necessarily the cheapest or best in the long run.

In short, try to look at total cost of ownership.
