Its pretty hard to answer these questions without knowing who your target market is, as that's key to knowing what sort of marketing strategy to use.

Define your target market clearly, then try and work out where they would be looking, or even just where they would spend their time and try and focus your marketing in those areas.

For instance if your target market is teenagers, it probably wouldn't be a good idea to place an advertisement in a newspaper as they don't read those (well they might read the comics)!

One integral part of Internet marketing is to get good quality backlinks to your site, so try and team up with a number of other sites within your industry and do some link exchanges, this will help you get ranked better in search engines as well as get some good exposure on like minded sites.

Depending on the market you target and the product SEO and /or PPC might be the way to go.

There are all sorts of other ideas from getting eye-catching car-stickers on friends cars to notices on boards that actually get read! try Craigslist and other free listings too.

Hi George

It depends on whether it is for products, ie a store or affiliate site, or for personal services.

Personal services depends more on building credibility while with products it matters more to have the goods/solutions people want - you can find out by checking the major keyword searches (see Google's numbers in the search box)

Not available for skype but you can send me an email.

George,

Your post said marketing for an online business so I'm assuming (like everyone else here) that you are looking to sell something online?

When it comes to online stuff I always start with understanding the target customers online searching behavior and the "key words" they would use to find your product or service.

Once you understand the keywords people you use to look for your stuff you can then optimise your website to appear or rank for those keywords and you can also get an idea of how competitive the market is.

That is, on Page 1 of google how competitive it is to rank along with or above these clients.

If you google "google adwords keyword tool" they have a free tool that tells you actual search volumes monthly in your market and that can get you started.

Also as The Internet Guy above suggested there is a free online marketing training event being run by Ed Dale called the Thirty Day Challenge which will teach you this stuff for free. it is about to start on 1st of August but they have already uploaded a bunch of free pre season training which includes the use of a tool called Market Samurai, which in my mind is the best keyword research tool there is.

Good luck.

Cheers
Edmund

I think twitter is the best avenue to promote your website with the lowest cost...it is simple to use and you can reach thousands of people with one posting. If you want to, you can save some time and buy existing twitter accounts on my website (assetize.com) and leverage that and reach your desired customer base. All the best!

One of the ealier post mentioned SEO.

I would say that first before you go ahead and start selling and heaviliy marketing your service you need to get your house in order.

What i mean is make sure thay your site is up to it and that you have no bugs and glitches that a potential customer might feel discouraged by.

Make sure your site looks good and is apealing to the target market.

Make sure that all you site is easily accessable and that you have a simple sure way of locating your products. have someone that knows what they are doing to copywrite the content so that you hit an average 3-5% of your keywords within the body of the text. you also want the test to be clear and as descriptive as possible, but not long winded.

Optimise your SEO by selecting appropriate keywords for your metatags. Remember, you might want to use the adwords tool to help you select these.

Post in forums such as these and create accounts on all the major social networking sites. Make sure that you alway submit links everyehere and in every signature containing your url. Post, post, post post..... etc....

Register the business in the directiory services (hotfrog etc...) you name it.

My personal favorite is make a Viral Video and post it on youtube which will include advertising for the site. This is a awesome way tio get hits.

The objective of the game is to get your name out there as much as possible.

Print, TV, Radio - they are all good but your target market is allready online so you dont need to tap into that. Research, research....etc...

There is so much out there. There is no one thing that will give you success... it's going to be hard work and sleepless nights.
