Default Newspaper articles

Hi I wonder if someone in the community can enlighhten me.

How do I search newspaper articles?

I have had several Flying Solo articles featured at news.com.au:-

Article 1

and

Article 2

and

Article 3

How do I find out if they actually went to print, and if they did how can I obtain a copy.

One appears to have been in Sydney's The Daily Telegraph on Thursday, but as I am in Brisbane, I never see this paper.

It was through Google Alerts that I was alerted - Tip a fantastic & free way to monitor your online exposure.

I have heard of media monitors, but won't that be expensive for a little out fit like me?

Thanks, thanks, thanks.

Hi Heather
Give your local or state library a call - I think they have newspapers available digitally and you should be able to arrange a digital search. If not, I know that QUT has digital databases that have local media - you will need to physically go there to access though (and maybe join as a member of the public? to access the database - sorry I can't remember).

And yes, media monitors is expensive...

cheers
Lisa

Hi Heather,

You can tell by checking the by-line.

See how yours says:

By Heather Smith

NEWS.com.au

January 29, 2009 08:58am

Now, have a look at this news piece and it says

By Ellen Whinnett, Peter Rolfe and Kellie Cameron

Sunday Herald Sun

February 01, 2009 12:01am

So, that piece was published in the Sunday Herald Sun and yours was published on news.com.au. If they ever publish you in the hard copy publication, the by-line will reflect which publication it was published in (they generally let you know, also).

Thanks for your advise, I have dropped the library an email, and see what they suggest. I have also emailed media monitors, but expect them to be expensive.

Hi Heather

I don't usually chase my tear sheets anymore, but when I did, I had surprisingly luck with simply contacting the actual media outlet for at least a PDF of the article. Most were happy to send out an actual newspaper as they generally keep some in their own archives. My advice is to 'strike while the iron is hot' though as I'm sure they have limited space and will recycle them 'ere long.

Good luck and please let us know what worked.

Firstly, fantastic for getting mentioned in the media!

I realise that I'm coming a little late to party on this one, but I thought I'd let you know about Media Monitors' low-cost, DIY media monitoring service, www.slicemedia.com.

It works like this: pick a monitoring package (I'd suggest you start with a 'taste' package - 90 days monitoring for $195 ex gst), sign up using your credit card, login, set up your search strings (a bit like creating a search in Google), choose the media you want monitored (press, radio, tv, websites, blogs), choose the locations (Australia, NZ, national, capital city, regional, rural) and you're away. PDF press articles, broadcast mentions and online links that match your search criteria are delivered into your online account - you can also set up an email alert telling you when you've received a match.

There are no long term contracts and you can cancel your subscription at anytime. We are really geared towards helping out small businesses with their media coverage.

For more info you can check out a tour: http://www.slicemedia.com/media-monitoring-tour.aspx

Hope that helps, and onwards and upwards with your media coverage!

PS. We've also got a blog with some helpful posts about getting media coverage such as a podcast with a MixFM Producer (http://slicemedia.blogspot.com/2009/...executive.html) and a podcast with a TODAY TV Producer (http://slicemedia.blogspot.com/2008/...-producer.html), and we've got a few more in the pipeline. Oh, and make sure you've checked out Laurel Papworth's list of Aussie Journos on Twitter (http://slicemedia.blogspot.com/2009/...n-twitter.html)

Hi Heather
When I was a journalism student I used http://www.newstext.com.au/
(all News Corp papers) Fr'ee sample searches for one newspaper. Very cheap to find any articles you want under keywords - it's a real time saver.

Hi Heather
Generally when the News site picks up your work it doesn't make it to the printed paper. Within News, it does seem to work in reverse though - so an article in the paper will often make it online.

Things are constantly evolving within News (as you would expect) and I would think we'll see more crossover in the future. Presently the 'divisions' occupy different buildings and have different staffing/policies.

It always amuses me when someone calls or emails and refers to an article 'today'....Er, What article? Where? What was it about?

All good exposure for you, even if it does come as a surprise!

Keep up the great writing,

Robert
