Hi All,

I strongly recommend these article on how to use Facebook to promote your business & important Facebook security issues:

"7 Mistakes Companies Make on FaceBook and how to Avoid Them"
http://bootcampdigital.com/tag/facebook-analytics/

"...many people focus on the number of fans or group members that they have. Get over it. I have met with a number of clients who have said “we need to get on Facebook because our competitor has X number of fans and we hardly have any”. The number of fans doesn’t matter – it is how you engage them..."

"Nearly half of Facebook users still accept unknown friends"
http://www.prosecurityzone.com/Custo...wn_friends.asp

"IT security and data protection firm, Sophos has released the results of its latest probe into how easy it is to steal identities via Facebook."

"Don't blindly accept friends. Treat a friend as the dictionary does, namely 'someone whom you know, like and trust."

Caveat emptor

Hi John,

It's great that you're researching the world of SMM. However, I think you're finding and focussing on articles that support your theory. These are far outweighed by the plethora of articles outlining how/where/why to use SMM.

There isn't any security problems with obtaining friends whom you don't know on FB. If you don't have any personal details you are not at risk. There are many security balances in place because of the people that choose to try to take our identities. Wonderful that you're bringing it up though, online security is very important.

Both of the links are great by the way, some important considerations.

But don't let it put you off the benefits of SMM and the benefits of gaining Friends on FB. Spreading the word about your business, especially in the startup/initial phase is very important.

Enjoy your weekend.

Hi Nathan,

I'm not clear on what is supposed to be my theory that is causing the disagreement between us.

I am not anti-Facebook, I'm pro encouraging people to learn and think about how to use the medium effectively.

The first article I referenced is about "outlining how/where/why to use SMM"

Are you saying that the you disagree with the recommendations it contains? If so, please elaborate and provide your experience so we can all learn something.

As to security issues and Facebook, have you read Facebook's own "security" pages? (http://www.facebook.com/security)? (Nearly 1.8 million people have "liked" this page.)

Try this Facebook article aimed at developers:

Jan 10: "Facebook Fights Social Spam with “Mark You Don’t Know” Response to Friend Requests"
http://www.insidefacebook.com/2010/0...iend-requests/

"Facebook has a lot of users who want to make new friends. And now the company is testing out a feature to make friending a little more meaningful."

"Also, the site is becoming a larger target for automated spam and phishing attacks, and one tactic is for spammers and scammers to set up fake profiles and friend people..."

The web is full of myths and inaccuracies. I think people need to read articles from authorative sources and I can't think of a more authoratative source about Facebook security than Facebook.

Regs,

John W

Hi everyone.

Let's keep this concept going and help each other out by providing another marketing avenue.

John - After your last post, I don't think we are disagreeing about anything. The articles you are referencing, as mentioned, are spot on and great advice.

But they shouldn't put anyone off taking advantage of this concept. Spreading the word about your business should only be seen as a good thing. Whether it's to known 'friends' or not.

Enjoy your weekend everyone.

Seems easier said than done. I came in a bit late to this thread and concept and it seems by then it had lost it's momentum, because although I added about 20 pages from here to my Like list only 6 responded likewise. I left the others there for some time but have now deleted them.

I would be interested though, as per my thread elsewhere, in hearing of any other ideas to increase ones following to a business page.

My page is a bit new yet and in the course of testing and probing the whole Facebook concept I added into my account the 3 or 4 other email addresses I use and was surprised at the number of "suggestions" coming through to my private page of people I knew or knew of. I am experimenting now with the idea of introducing them to my business page and, in effect, letting them spread the word.
