Very interesting, I do agree they look genuine, but I would be dubious about what methods they might be using to give free SEO.

It is very easy to generate traffic to a website, but it isn't as easy to generate targeted valuable traffic.

Not all SEO and SEM is created equal, if the SEO provider you are using uses black hat or aggressive techniques it can actually hurt your rankings and get you a big fat slap in the face by google - and it will be very hard to get your place back.

Trust is a serious issue for this isn't it?

I followed up with an offer for 6 months free SEO with a UK lady I found here and she wanted password access to the website to make it happen. I offered to do the updates myself that she sent through but she wasn't interested in this process.

I've held back because of trust. I can't see a logical reason to give a stranger password access to the guts of my site. I have wondered if it is standard practice for a SEO provider to have this open access and would love feedback on this.

Its not that uncommon unfortunately, if the companies SEO strategy includes on page optimisation (and it should) then then they may need access to your code - however they don't necessarily need direct access to your website, you could easily enough send them the files and they can make the changes for you.

The way I help my clients with SEO is to advise them what changes they should make, tell them what sort of impact they expect the changes to make so they can test and see how effective it is. That way we can measure it and actually see if there is any ROI for that particular strategy.

A lot of companies want to hold their SEO secrets close to their chest.. the truth is, there are no secrets and if you can work with a client, keep them in the loop, let them know what you are doing, its a win / win situation.

Thanks for that. I've been wondering what it was within the industry. I'm a very independent person (like most soloists are) and just handing over remote access to my website strikes me as wrong and foolish. If someone wants to do things to my site and I don't know what they ALL are then I'm not doing it.

Your logic of working with clients about their websites makes a lot more sense to me - the win/win approach.

Are the changes made to the meta tags only or a combination of content and meta tags?

Thanks for helping with this.

It can be a number of things depending on how your site is structured and what you are targeting, usually however it is things like;
  • Site Title
  • Meta Tags
  • Content
  • Menu Items
  • Link Placement
  • etc..

Lots of different things make up on page SEO rather than just META tags and content.. so thats why its important to work with the client to make sure we are both on the same page (no pun intended :P)!

Hope that helps.
