Default Business Ideas for husband and wife team!?

Hey All,

Over the past few months I have been talking with quite a few couples that are keen to quit their day jobs and keen to adventure into the world of business, however they don't have any idea what sort of business they want to run!

I have also discussed this with a few friends and most of the responses were similar, why not start a cafe or leverage your experience in your career and start a similar business, but none of these ideas suit.

Backgrounds of one of the couples is the hubby is an IT guy, and the Wife works in the beauty/salon industy, both are pretty keen to get out of thier respective industries and try something new.

Ideally after a lifestyle business, something that allows them to be fairly flexible and has potential for growth - they are not afraid of hard work and putting the hours in.

I guess their investment capacity would be about $100k to either buy or establish something new.

They aren't keen on the idea of starting a cafe, or even a business in thier own industries, they are fairly risk averse and motivated.. I think no matter what business they are in they will be successful!

I've suggested things like starting a franchise, although this needs to be tread carefully and make sue they don't just buy themselves a job! I have also mentioned looking into some sort of online business as this can have the potential for growth as well as the lifestyle factor!

So, can anyone recommend any business ideas that would suit a young motivated husband and wife type?!

Hi

I guess if they are looking for a lifestyle choice I think your idea of an online business is good since it can operate at all hours without too much intervention. Its an increasing area and will only get bigger. They can also do it part time before leaving their jobs as a bit of a safety net.

The ideas of cleaning, lawns etc that Burgo mentioned is great since they are areas where people are time poor these days, but with the recession some people are cutting back on non essential services. Having said that, I do know people in these industries who are busier than ever!

Since they have mentioned having a lifestyle, they might need to keep an eye on their long term business strategy.

Sometimes people work hard in their service based business only to find that when they go to retire or sell, the goodwill they created in the business is attached to them personally and without them the business isn't worth much.

Its not always the case, but small service based business are easily influenced by the person/s who supply the service, not necessarily the business name they represent.

I just I would mention it since looking at what they want long term could help them choose an industry/business type now.

I hope that helps a little

AVOID AVOID AVOID a franchise unless you want to buy a job ... that's really the only option you have with a franchise.

And if this is their first business, I would also avoid something like a cafe - far too much financial risk.

They are far better off taking the knowledge they have now (that doesn't have to be the industry they are currently in - it could be information they have on stuff they are interested in ... I know one lady who was in IT, for example, who threw it in to work in the psychic mentoring area and does very well!) - and turning that into a service business.

Now, as mentioned, this has to be carefully planned - most people who start a service based business build themselves a jail as surely as those who buy a franchise ... however, with the right information on things like productisation and systemisation, it's quite possible to take a business from service based to product based with high levels of systemisation and thereby exploding profits while keeping hours down.

My suggestion to anyone in this position would be:

1. Choose something you are interested in to create a business around. This will probably not be the business that ends up supporting you - consider it a "training wheels" business - one you can make mistakes on and screw up without ruining your future!

2. Get educated! Start going to seminars and find mentors (NOTE: ONLY mentors who have DONE WHAT YOU WANT TO DO. There are a lot of really crap business coaches out there who are hawking answers while their own businesses lay in tatters. It is absolutely essential that any mentor or coach you choose has gotten the results that you want to get - both for themselves and for clients). Oh and second note - don't think that you can get all the information you need for free. You can't. At some point, you have to bite the bullet and pay. AND the more you end up spending on your education, the more you'll make (provided that you follow the provisio in NOTE #1!!).

3. Make sure all of your credit cards and debts are paid off. While you still have a job it's a great idea to get this stuff out of the way. Also, put aside some savings to live on in case things don't go great, immediately.

4. With the help of your business mentor, education and accountant, put together a business plan.

5. Start running your business while you're still working. Yes, it takes up a chunk of your time, but here's the thing - there's a good chance you won't make money in the first few months. So get out there, hawk the idea, start getting clients in and get the business up and running while you've still got the comfort of a full time job.

6. You'll KNOW when you need to quit your job. There'll come a point where it's like ... okay. I can't keep doing this - something has got to give. That's when you take the plunge.

On a personal note, I'm a huge, huge, huge fan of information products and marketing - I've put this separate from the rest of what I've said because there's definite bias in this ... I create information products in the service side of my business and show people how to do it through the events and product side of my business, so this is definitely not objective information! LOL!

That said, I've seen products used within service business halve the time people work while doubling their income. It works - but of course, I'm sure there are other methods that work, too ... this is just a personal fave of mine (which is WHY I got into my business in the first place).

At the end of the day I think the most important thing is to choose to do stuff you enjoy with people you like.

Great reply Leela, I agree and fully concur with choosing something you're interested in.
This may sound silly but I also think it's very important to be in a business where the product margins are decent! In my role as an external CFO I have worked with lots of business and some are always going to struggle simply because their margins are soo small. This can be a problem with franchises as the franchisor takes the juicy margin that you may otherwise have received. In other businesses the products haven't been clearly differentiated or the pricing structures are out of whack with the value provided and what is needed to make a decent profit. On many occassions these problems have been able to be addressed, but if you are thinking of starting a business, make sure you are not going to fall into this trap.

I agree Angus!

That's why I recommend info products - you can develop them for next to nothing and as long as you are providing the value, you can make a huge margin on them ...

Well i think nothing is greater than the synergy of spouse business partnership. However it should be something or a goal they are both passionate in. I have a good friend over at Sydney Business Exchange in St Leonards who has loads of businesses on his books:

That may be a good place to start. Just give Ben a call and tell him i told you about him.
