Default Chossing a name?

How did you do it and stick with it?

The one thing that is currently stopping me from going forward is a name. I will chose one then sit on it for a while and end up not liking it. What methods did you use to get your name?

Hey,

I would also like some help with this.. I've been having a bit of trouble choosing choosing a name.

Few things i've seen that i have found interesting/helpful are;

- Pick a name that is short and easy to remember (even if it isn't related).
- Common words for your business in another language.
- Names which incorporates the item you are selling e.g if you are selling you might call yourself Mouse computers

Another thing which can be helpful is get a piece of paper and write down any name that is relevant or ones of current business's as you will be able to draw on ideas from there.

Good luck,

Chris

What line of business are you in? Maybe we could help suggest some names for you...

And also do a domain search to see if it's already taken.

My husband actually chose the name of my business. It was my birthstone & my favourite colour is blue. It just all seemed to fit!

With any names that you come up with, you should check to see whether they are available to be registered before you fall in love it.

Felicity - what a great way to choose a business name! Love it.

Simmo - I had a client who came to me about 4 years ago with a name he loved. It was instinctive and really what he wanted.

But many people said he shouldn't use it and all my logo development was virtually a waste of time and money. Fast forward after 4 years, having signage by a marketing company made to another name, changing everything, he decided it wasn't him - came back to my studio and said he wanted to go back to his original idea that we had worked on together.

Sometimes a business name really needs to be instinctive.
But before registering it, make sure the domain name isn't taken. If it is, then do a modified version of the name, still keeping it your own.
For example, say the name was 'Blue Blooms'. But the domain www.blueblooms.com.au was taken. What about Iris Blue Blooms, or Periwinkle Blue Blooms? Think about something that is still 'you'.

Cheers, Karen C.

Hi Simmo,

As others have said I think you have to go with something that YOU feel comfortable with! At the end of the day you are going to be the one spruiking the business to all and sundry, so you have to love it.

Depending upon your business category you may like to write down a whole lot of 'words/ terms' that fit in with it and see if anything comes to mind. As an example, if you are starting up a courier business some words that come to mind are jet, fast, speedy, reliable, on time, direct, door to door, rocket, parcel, letter, package, ship, send, move and on it goes

I also found it positive to list a few names I liked and see what some friends and family thought about it. When I then narrowed it to a couple I told a select few what they were, left it for a week and then asked them if they could remember either of them as if your name has good 'stickiness' you are on the right track.

Cheers,
Kristian

Another option could be something more relative when it comes to the domain name if the intended name has been taken.
A company called Blue Blooms may have the business name registered in Queensland (and have taken domain name) you are in SA. You can register and operate under the Blue Blooms business name in SA and register something like AdelaideFlorist.com.au or FlowersForSale.com.au.

Sometimes I think business' could recieve alot more type-in business if they ditched their actual trading name when it comes to choosing a domain.

It doesn't have to match ... and sometimes (depending on the business name) it's more beneficial to the business if it doesn't.

FredsFishingRodsAndSportingGear.com.au or SportsGear.com.au?
