Default Starting an Import Business

Hi All,

Firstly thanks for this wonderful site.

I am looking at creating an import business to bring in a certain product that is currently being sold in Japan. I believe that this product could do extremely well in the Australian market but I have no idea where to begin.

I would like to secure myself as the sole rights distributor for this product. I believe that this product could be sold from purely a website based business but I also believe that I could approach some of the large retail chains in the future to have this product as part of their stock.

Am I best to approach the manufacturer first? I really don't know the way forward and was looking for some advice.

Very much appreciated.
Dean.

Approach the manufacturer first , they may not want to export or they may already have an agent for Australia. Otherwise you will be wasting your time wont you.

I recommend talking with Jackie from www.joltconsulting.com.au - her business is all about helping small businesses import. Also talk with AusTrade, they may be able to help too - however they may just be interested in helping businesses export...

The Australian Gift and Homewares Association also has Trade Fairs in Melbourne and Sydney and lots of information and help for member importers and more.

Hey, good stuff on wanting to start a import business. I hope it goes well.

There can be a lot to it, but there is also a lot of info out there that can help you along.

As mentioned by others, first you need to talk with the company and establish whether you can distribute their product, whether someone has already got these rights etc.

They will probably want to see some kind of business plan and system so they are happy with you as a distributor, and feel comfortable with you selling/marketing their product. What can you offer them?

Check with the govt customs website that has some good info on importing, also maybe talk to a customs broker about what you want to bring in. They should beable to advise you on any additional tariffs costs on the items.

Anyway, that is just a minor beginning point really, you've still got to try and sell it after that! but don't be put of like most people if it seems like too much hard work give it a go if you believe in it.

Good luck

i think so too..if you want to be the sole agent in australia, i'm pretty sure that the manufacturer would like to see some sort of business plan from you i guess?!?

and as far as i know, the AUD/JAP exchange rate is not that great at the moment, just make sure you set the price accordingly....

Definitely seek out information from AusTrade. You'll also need to find out about any legal restrictions on the product if any, for example, if its a cream or something, then the TGA will have appropriate info on labelling, etc.

A friend has a successful importing business from Japan, and it's definitely able to be done, however, make sure you do all the ground thoroughly as you could lose out.

Good luck!!

If you're looking at importing - I highly recommend you work through the AusTrade website and take a look at the data on there.

http://www.austrade.gov.au

There is a wealth of information on doing business in different countries along with info on how to establish relationships with foreign manufacturers.

They will also be able to point you in the right direction.

The importation business is littered with disasters where people have failed to seek adequate legal, financial and general business advice so tread carefully. If done right, it can be a great experience.

Geoffrey.

Great Idea, Analyze where you can find a legitimate manufacturer or drop shipper who would give the best service.
