Default Free/Opensource Software Alternatives

I saw the post about free/paid software and thought we could start a thread recommending free/opensource alternatives. Here are a few that I use to get things rolling;

Mind Mapping http://freemind.sourceforge.net/wiki....php/Main_Page
FTP http://filezilla-project.org/
Browser http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/
Audio recorder http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
Notepad/text http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/uk/site.htm
Antivirus free.avg.com
Photoshop type grahpics
www.gimp.org

This page here has more for windows users;

FREEBIES!!!

Faststone Imaging software

Unfortunately their great screen capture software now costs something.

If you are serious about photo management though ACDsee is the only product you should even consider (unfortunately it costs money though)

For all you graphics artists out there a ruler for windows

HEX And RGB colour picker

Free softphone for making VOIP Calls

Thats enough free stuff for the time being, any more and I will do myself out of a job...

Oh yes, gotta love free. Doesn't come any cheaper!

How good is Google Docs? I practically run my entire business through them.

A fellow poster put me onto http://namethis.com/name_this if you're looking for help with choosing a business name. Although I'd ask you to look in before you look out.

Screen capture for Mac? Go to http://www.jingproject.com/ it's fabulous, really easy to use. I think the limit is 5 minutes for each video though, that might be a limitation, depends on your project I guess.

Just a note to let you know that we covered this topic in an article on the main site Best free software for soloists

It's worth reading through the comments as there's a great selection of free software there.

There are a plethora of software and services for document & project management, task lists, CRM, personal productivity etc. (of which we use many), but I am still to see a worthy accounting of payroll system that is suited to Australia/NZ and that is free or open source.

Here's hoping that someone can enlighten me..

Ah yes, Open Source!

There really are some great things out there including:
Orange HRM - OS Human Resources Package (we use this)
VTiger CRM - Great CRM Package

These are just a sample of some really good open source projects around.

If you are after more, then may I recommend Source Forge.

Cheers,

Geoffrey.
