Default How many keywords are bringing you traffic?

Hi all, I want to write a blog post on the power of Blogging for long tail SEO. i.e. getting traffic for longer, more specific keywords (lots of them).

I can use myself as an example but I bet there are active bloggers out there who have been blogging for years who are getting much better results.

I looked at my stats today. I have been actively blogging for 18 months or so. Before I started I was getting traffic for 318 keywords per month (my site was just a typical site with mostly information about our services but was still old-ish and established).

This month the number sits at 943.

I get this information from the search overview report which shows the top keywords and then shows how many in total over on the right.

I've got 141 blogs posts on my blog to give you some idea.

I'm thinking if someone has been blogging for years consistently they would have hundreds of posts and would be getting traffic for thousands of keywords, I've love to hear about it to reference it in my post.

Thanks and happy christmas.

I have a client who does blogging regularly. Currently his blog is receiving 3K + organic traffic. What he does, he finds keywords with long tail keywords which have 1000 to 2500 hundred searches per month with low competition even more searches but only if competition is low. And i build 300 - 500 link each of his post including social bookmarking, article submission and few things more + Social Media Marketing. And in 3 to 5 months his post reaches on 1st page.

Same thing you can do fist find long tail keywords with low competition and write on related topic then do some SEO to that post. You will see good results very soon.

Hope you got my point!

Is that exact match searches? or Broad match searches? That kind of sounds like a lot to be ranking for a lot of keywords with that many exact match searches. You would only need a couple to get 3000 visitors a month I think is that what you are saying?

I'm specifically interested in how many keywords are bringing in traffic as opposed to actual visitors for this one.

Hi Dan,
You are aiming too low.

You can do it with any website. If you keep adding more content you should be attracting more RELEVANT search engine referrals. A web page in blog format just make it harder in many/most cases.

If you want an example: A 5 page website published in 2008 whose content is almost never changed...
Over the last 6 months, 4,130 unique keywords generated 15,400 visitors. 90+% of this tiny site's referrals are from SE. It ranks #1 for its most frequently used keyword but this only generates 10-12% of site traffic. It ranks in the top 5 for almost all of the 15 most frequently used keywords but these only generate around 30% of SE referrals.

If a site contains hundreds of pages, you should probably be thinking about tens of thousands of keywords that generate SE referrals over a 12 month period.

Happy Christmas and New Year.

Regs,
JohnW

No it is Broad Match searches. But Yes Exact match searches should be minimum 500. It also helps to rank in other related Long Tail keywords.

No 3000 visitors are per day. Yes other also rank with such terms but these keywords don't have high competition so it becomes easy to ranking.

Actually when website being to receive good amount of traffic. It becomes trusted and authority site. Then for new sites it becomes difficult to beat your page even you are not doing linkbuilding for that page.

Hi Dan,

Interesting post. We have recently updated our website and as such, have been spending a lot of time researching SEO. Blogging seems like the way to go, but I am interested in the conversion rates you get from the traffic generated by your blog posts. High volume of traffic is great, but if the conversation rate is significantly lower, it almost seems pointless? Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Cheers

My conversion rates are woeful. But once you start blogging you attract a whole new audience so it's very hard to compare conversion rates.

For example if I had a one page site which provided an opt in form and a video and nothing else say something like http://www.silvercircle.com/ I would get a high conversion rate because a high % of people going there are interested and there's good potential there for them to sign up.

However I have all sorts of people going to my blog, other bloggers, commenters, SEO people doing research, people just starting out, all sorts. Only a small amount are potential customers.

The thing people don't really understand is just how much traffic you need to start getting some good benefit from it. Here are some numbers.
  • I get around 5000 visits to the blog per month
  • Out of these I'll get around 100 signing up for my newsletter
  • I'll get around 30 or 1 a day contacting me about a project

It doesn't sound like much but try getting one lead a day using adwords. Let's say $3 / click and a 2% conversion rate you are paying $150 for each lead. That's $4.5k a month or over $50k a year.

Also blogging is also only part of SEO (I do a lot more than just writing articles to rank well in Google).

And on the other side of it, SEO is only one of the benefits of blogging.

Hope that helps.

Why don't you just use adwords to get people to sign up for your email list? I have heard of a guy getting 100 signups a day, with a $25 a day budget. If you get a 2% conversion on your new signups then that's $12.5 per lead!

No chance! At least not in my industry. Let's day you got 25% of your visitors to sign up (which would be very very difficult) you are talking about getting 400 visitors for $25 which is around 6c per click. Keywords in my industry are 100x that.

Gosh, web design must have one of the highest CPC's out of all the industries.. but if you do the research for low comp kw's and find a few golden nuggets it's bound to pay off..
