Default Website Not Found Messages

Hi All

Internet is driving me insane (which for an ecommerce site owner is probably not a good thing).

We keep getting messages on both computers and in Explorer, Firefox and Chrome to say "website not found". This is often when we are already in a website (even our own) and just opening a new page. Just happened when I clicked on the forum button here!

Just wondered if this was a "global" problem or if it could be something with our modem? Anyone else experiencing this problem?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Wendy,

Sounds like you need to chat to your internet provider. They will help you run some hardware and/or network diagnostic checks.

David

As per David's comments - best place to start is your internet provider.
Of course, they'll probably tell you to turn off your modem for 10 minutes and turn it back on.

What you're describing sounds like it could be a DNS issue. The other thing it may be is a malware infection of some kind. Sometimes they hide themselves as local processes, and redirect the internet.
Using internet Explorer, try going into Tools > options > connections> Lan settings. Make sure there's nothing filled out under "use a proxy server" or "automatically detect settings"

Happy to advise if you want to take a screencapture of this section also

Thanks for your help.

I just checked Explorer and there is nothing filled out in the areas you mentioned.

I have Norton 360 installed so hopefully it would have caught any malware, but I will run a full check on both computers.

What is a DNS issue?

Thanks again

Hi Wendy,

This does sound very strange and perhaps it could be a virus. I would recommend installing Malwarebytes and running a full scan. Your hosts file could be poisoned which is another possibility. I know this sounds technical, but if you're on Windows you can open up command prompt and run:

ping www.domainhere.com

tracert www.domainhere.com

You can also try a nslookup to ensure that you're receiving DNS records from Bigpond's DNS servers. In command prompt type:

nslookup

set type=all

Then you'll be able to enter the domain in and records should return back.

Cheers,
Shaun

Hi Shaun

Thanks for your response. Bit techy for me LOL. I understand about the command prompt, but not sure what to domain put in the url

Cheers

Hi

I agree it tends to be sounding like a DNS issue and speaking with your provider would be the first step, especially if you are in websites when it is happening. ie looking a page and then go to move on to another page in that site and get the error.

The ISP may well get you (talk your thru) testing certain things and provide testing to them but yes, I know it can be very annoying.

Good luck!

it could be a timing out issue, again something to discuss with your ISP.

Lean towards the ISP at this stage rather than your computer as it is happening on two computers.
