What are you looking for in an Online Payment Gateway?

Hi Everyone!

We have recently launched a new Online Payment Gateway (https://www.fatzebra.com.au) for merchants to be able to take credit card payments online.

Although we have focused on creating a simple & secure solution, we would love to hear what you are looking for in a Gateway facility. Would love to hear from current merchants online, developers and people looking to start up a website themselves. After all, what good is a product that doesn’t support the end users.

I love the look of your website - very simple, straight forward and professional.

Is a merchant account also required to be able to use your virtual terminal? If so, is this a service you assist with setting up? I am keen to set up a payment gateway to be able to take credit card payments over the phone.

Unfortunately yes, an online merchant account is still required.

As we are a Gateway, we require a merchant terminal to be set up for us to transact against. This is something we can help you set up as we do understand it can be tricky and daunting.

It has been an interesting journey an by no means straight forward. Our goal has been to make a product which is as simple and reliable as possible and free our clients of the security burdens associated with credit card transactions.

Hey clintmaher,

eWay seems to be the industry standard in australia along with Securepay, both of which supply a good product, and reasonable pricing. There are also many other gateways in the market which re-sell Securepay and just re-brand their site.

While developing this product, we focused on what merchants wanted out of a gateway, along with what developers would like to see (from integration to service). This sees benefits such as:

- Slightly lower priced than the majors
- No set up costs
- A fast gateway solution which is self hosted. We do not re-sell!
- Tier 1 PCI DSS certified
- 100% dedicated to our customers and service
- 100% dedicated Gateway. We are not looking at providing multiple solutions under different banners.

Most of all, we are new to market, which allows us to change with the market if need be. We want to work closely with or customers to ensure our product stays relevant and as simple as possible.

I would love to hear what your thoughts are on the current options in the market and where you think the industry could improve. The more feedback we get, the better.

Hi JohnW,

There are several advantages to using a Third Party Gateway like Fat Zebra.

Firstly, if down the track you were to look at moving you business to another bank, you would have issues with changing your gateway. This would involve potential developer costs and loss of past data (reports etc) as well as potential exit fees. We allow you to change banking details with a simple form through our dashboard. No development costs involved and you will still have access to all past transaction reports. Handy if you need to reconcile accounts or trace back a transaction.

A growing business should also follow up their bank regularly to make sure they're not being over charged on transactions, and compare their current costs to other banks.

Secondly, some of the bank run gateways struggle to provide recurring billing options. This is a big issue for a lot of businesses.

Lastly, sometimes the bank run option is more expensive than a Third Party option. It is always worth comparing the two.
