Default Logo for my Store

Hi There I have just set up my new e-commerce store and am looking for someone who can design a logo for me. If you know of anyone I would appreciate a link to contact them.

Hi

Try this site www.logosauce.com

Basically you put the amount of money you want to spend for a logo and the site runs a contest were graphic designers from around the world design logos for you and you choose the one you like the most.

I used it and paid $500. I recommend less money, try a couple hundred dollars and you should get the same amount of entries.

Hope this helps.

There are many designers on this forum including myself. Quick and easy logos have their place, however professional logos are developed over many hours, and to get the best then research and development of a logo from scratch will more likely get something that won't date quickly and won't look like someone else's logo.

A final logo should also be presented in various forms including a vector PDF, (EPS do not show transparency effects and most professional design programs can now place PDFs), as well as a pixel based logo (as on the web). A vector PDF is one that can be scaled as high as a building without loss of clarity. A pixel image cannot be enlarged without fuzziness.

Another designer, Jacob Cass, has written a great article here ...

You may also want to look at http://99designs.com/

This is also an online contest where you put up a brief and budding designers submit their drafts to you to choose from.

I have used this a number a times before for my clients and it has been fantastic.

Hi Karen

thanks again for reminding me of reading Jacob's blog more often. He's always right on the spot with his comments.

Hi Jewelry Man
I would also suggest to think about what you want from your logo - and for your business.
Of course you can go onto those spec pages if you want to save money ... although I'd say that you can easily start loosing money when the correspondence with the guy who does the design gets complicated or if the results are not satisfying.
Or you get in contact with a pro. I'm sure you'll find enough graphic designers here on FS who can give you the results you are looking for without much hassle.

BTW: I wouldn't recommend 99designs at all - just read this comment: http://www.graphicpush.com/99designs-bullshit-20

If you have to go onto a contest page at least choose one that works with bidding (as guru.com).

Cheers
Astrid

I dont design logos but I would never go to a site like that for a couple of reasons.

My business relies on other businesses, if I send the stuff I need done to the lowest paying, lowest quality overseas offer then I am undermining my own future clients.

I dont believe in exploiting desperate people who will do work with no guarantee of any payment, its not fair to them and its not fair to locally based graphics designers who pay a fortune for the software to even be able to operate.

I think its why people want to do business with people they know, that way business often flows both ways.

I have personally used 99designs on a number of occasions and it isn't that bad, its as good as the information you put in.

I have personally never used it for a logo, but for other designs I have.

The thing with using it is you need to be detailed in your own brief, you only get out of it what you put in.

If you just say '.. I need a logo for my business, I am a plumber..' then you will get a whole raft of different designs.

If however you write a couple of paragraphs on what the business does, how you want it represented, what sort of colours you want, what other styles of logos you like, where you are going to be displaying it, letterheads, business cards etc.. then you are much more likely to get a better repsonse.

The designers submit entries to you, and you can critique the designs and ask for changes, complete re-designs etc.. Other designers can see what each designer is submitting, so they are effectively trying to out do each others logos.

The onus really goes back to the business owner in this type of model, you are saving the money of a logo designer doing the research of your business and you are doing that part yourself.

Sure 99designs isn't for everyone, but it has certainly worked for me in the past, and I will use it again in the future.

And that - for the designer - without any guarantee that you get paid for your time and work.
Which no professional designer, who is running a serious business, would do - you also wouldn't find an architect, a doctor, a lawyer or a electrician who would be happy to get paid only when the client is satisfied with the result.

You will mainly find very young designers on pages like 99designs, desperate to get experience, or people from overseas or untrained 'designers'. There is also a lot of copy and paste going on on these specs pages - and that is not what you can expect from professionals.

There will always be demand for these specs work pages which is ok. It's a matter of what kind of clientele/services people look for. The range is still wide enough.

There are better ways to find logos that things like 99 Designs (as much as I am a fan of a lot of SitePoint's efforts in our industry I am not so sure about 99 Designs). If you really need a pre-fab logo - Pixel Logo is pretty good.

Having said that, I much prefer using local designers to do my graphic design work, and have a couple of designers I work with. If you would like more information, PM me and I can send you their contact details...
