Default IPN, API, PDT - paypal question

Hi there,

Hoping there is somebody out there with some knowledge who can point me in the right direction...

I am trying to set up with an affiliate marketing agency and they need me to add a tracking code to my confirmation page. I am using paypal buttons and have set these up so they go to my own confirmation page (I have called it paypalsuccess.htm, created in Dreamweaver).

On this page I added their tracking code which is essentially a 1x1 pixel image which sends back data to their server. The data it needs to send back to the server are the paypal info about customer ID and total amount.

I have found the paypal IPN variables, but am not sure if I can just add them into this code or if I need to find somebody who can set up this whole IPN (or PDT?) stuff for me.

Can somebody please let me know if I can just add the 2 variables (txn_id and mc_gross) into this tracking code or if I need a more complicated set up!?

Thanks a lot!

Cheers,
Jude

Hi Jude,

This is all completely over my head, so I have my fingers crossed that someone around here will be able to advise you.

Is there anything else about your website they might need to know in order to be able to point you in the right direction?

Good luck with it,
Jayne

yeah, hope somebody is able to point me in the right direction. I don't think they would need more info, but happy to clarify if somebody has more detailed questions.

Once I know if I need this IPN / API or PDT stuff I can then simply look for a programmer with those skills and pay them to do it for me. I just don't want to spend the money on a complicated setup if I don't need to...!

Thanks,
Jude

Hi Jude,
I am not familiar with paypal affiliate processing but do have affiliate marketing set up on my site. My advice would be to treat any payment processing with great care as it can really muck up your orders and you are dealing with customers information. (yes, I have messed up my payment processing in the past!).
Also, when you pass your order total off to your affiliate, make sure it does not include your postage charges, otherwise you will be paying commission on postage too.

Hi Sarah,

Thanks for your message! And good tip about the postage. At the moment the things that will be sold are gift vouchers which will be emailed so no postage price is required. I will remember that in case I ever add more that need postage!

Initial testing indicates the info is not being sent back in the confirmation page the way I have set it up...

Thanks,
Jude
