Just one thing with VOIP, as other VOIP users would be aware. You generally have free untimed calls with VOIP both locally and nationally. Funny thing is that as soon as I call a 1300 number I get charged (Engin), so I always look for a real number. (Scungy bugger I know.. LOL)

Cheers,

Hi Everyone,

I'm interested in a similar solution - do any of the solutions mentioned in this thread work with mobile phones?

I'd love to have a landline be the main business phone (with a 1300 number) but then flick a switch and forward to a mobile for when I'm not in the office (or after 10 rings).

The problem being a landline means $35/month rent
or
just use a mobile - but 1300 forward charges seem very expensive.

any ideas?

Thanks,

Thanks,
I don't think there is anyway you will avoid mobile call fees on a redirect. One possible solution may be 3G and a softphone on your mobile (if it's computerised enough).

I can't speak for other providers, but I use myTel, I can have my IP based Desk Phone (Snom 820) plugged in and a softphone (X-Lite) connected to the same extension (or different extension), I can then press buttons to forward things to different extensions and do all kinds of stuff which I don't need to do .....so you could if you had 2 extensions with them, then forward back and forth just as though you had two office phones. The only fee you would pay is your 3G data costs.

As for the reliablilty of 3G and VOIP, well, I'd have my doubts and I reckon it'd be painful...but...if you want it bad enough it might be worth a shot...

Just my thoughts on possibilities....

Well I've worked out a temporary solution that is scalable should I move to a 1300 number, which I will do after my first few paying clients...

I went the skype route with a skypein local number. I'm currently trying it and at the first sign bad quality it's out of here. So far so good, I had a clear conversation with Janna (FletcherTax) yesterday and have called a few support desks already.

I can supposedly have unanswered skypein calls automatically forwarded to my mobile which is not very cheap (30c a minute as far as I can tell), and I'm yet to get this to work. Worst case is someone has to call my mobile.

When I have a 1300 number I can also get this forwarded to the skypein number.

And when I get the Iphone or Ipad of whatever (oh yeah I will) and Skype is on the 3G network (or even before, with wireless), I have a very mobile solution.

As you can see I've amalgamated a lot of your advice, so thanks everyone.

It's not quite 'switch flicking' though... but in time I'd love to just use skype 3g - when it arrives.

You seem happy with your solution. Now you can let everyone know how it turns out for you and be the authority on this kind of thing If anyone asks, we'll just say: "Ask Ali!"

Yeah except being an authority in a world chaining as fast as this is too much work for me

If anyone wants to try it out from clientside, just give me a call on 07 3040 1662. Keep in mind I have a relatively good internet connection - I'm pretty sure it's the 'ping' that counts most here rather than the speed. You can check it speedtest.net

Sorry to catch the end of this thread...

however i'd like to re-ignite it.

So from all the posts, i gather you can have Voip foward calls to your mobile? How does one get a Voip number anyhow? i'm with iinet naked Dsl....

Like most i'm going down the path of a 1300/1800 number but i hear from whirlpool forums that there are a lot of hidden costs and many providers out there!

I have an account with Engin They offer a mobile addon that is charged at $1.95 per month.
Nuts and Bolts;
Get an engin account for your homeline. It costs $10 per month. I use it as a second line. They supply a voice box that you plug into your modem. You plug a second phone into the back of the voicebox. Call rates are local and national, 10 cents untimed. Calls to mobiles are more expensive.
The advantage of the mobile addon is that You will now be able to give out your Engin phone number to people and either your landline will ring and/or your mobile will ring, through your wireless network. I like this idea because I live in a poor mobile reception area.
Have a look here

Cheers, Dave
