Default using email marketing to promote business offerings

I would like to start using email marketing to promote our companies offerings (products and services) within the melbourne CBD. I have very little knowledge and experience with email marketing, so I would like to turn myself over to this group for any help you can provide. In the first instance my main concerns are:

1. should I use an external service or is it possible to do it myself.

2. if I were to do it myself, what will I need? ( e.g. a database of business contacts, software application, internet based service, etc)

3. Where can I get a business database for email marketing from containing contact details such as business name, business address, contactname, email address, contact phone, contact fax, ect for the Melbourne/victoria/australia area?

4. I'm sure there are many good external service providers for email marketing services within the Melbourne CBD. I would be interested on hearing from others who they would recommend for this service.

Any assistance on these questions would be greatly appreciated.

There are a number of approaches that you could take with email marketing, depending on the number of contacts you have and how often you want to contact them.

For a very small number of people to be contacted infrequently you can manage your email marketing through your normal email client such as Outlook. However, there are many benefits to using specialised email marketing software once your database starts to grow and you want to keep in regular contact.

Email marketing software will help you keep your database up-to-date by providing an automated double opt-in subscription process and by managing unsubscribes to keep you on the right side of SPAM laws. Email marketing software will give you feedback on who has read your email and what links in your email they have clicked on. In this way you can evaluate the effectiveness of your marketing campaign and improve it over time - leading to increased leads and sales.

You can use a hosted service - best for smaller databases as you pay by the number of emails sent.

Of for larger databases, or frequent contact installing email marketing software on your own web server /web hosting service will be more economical particularly as many small business websites do not use the capacity of their hosting service each month anyway.

Building your database can be done a number of ways. For example you should have offers on your website where people enter their email address in return for something of value such as an ebook or a coupon and so on. Alternatively there are companies which sell databases with contacts who meet the specific demographic criteria you might be looking for in your target market.

The Spam Act now prevents rental of lists of businesses.

You can, however access lists based on people's interests.

That said, email is very problematic because so much can go unread and caught by filters.

If your market is the CBD, then put your thinking cap on and generate some novel ways of getting your business name out there - if you sell ice cold drinks, get some poor promo people in overcoats with branding on it to hand out fliers with great offers and feed into your sales process that way.

Or get an artist to do some chalk art (themed to your business) on the street and have people handing out fliers to those who stop and look.

The fliers have a good offer that people can text, email , phone or visit the website to take advantage of. Basically look at response mechanisms that allow you to capture their contact details so you can market to them going forward.

If you want to use SMS (instant, readily respondable to there and then) I can help - just drop me a PM

Hi Cityline,

I use Vision 6 for Email and SMS campaigns http://www.vision6.com.au/ it has free training and highly scalable. Vision 6 is used by businesses like ANZ, Telstra and IBM Australia. They cater for small to enterprise level businesses. The cost is much low compared to others, like MailChimp and Aweber

Emails
1 - 200 : 4 cents (per email)
201 - 2,000 : 3 cents
2,001 - 10,000 : 2 cents
> 10,000 : 1 cent

SMS
1 - 200 : 22 cents (per sms)
201 - 2,000 : 21 cents
etc.

Highly recommend it if you are after an ongoing service. Best of luck!

Best Regards,
Samith W.
