Small Business Childrens/baby clothing label

Hi There

Very nice to meet you all, I am looking forward to using this site and hopefully getting some fantastic advice on my new small business venture.
At the moment it is all "research research research". I am originally from the UK but married to an Australian and have a 19 month old son. I was working for a well known clothing company in Australia but left when I decided to have a child. Most of the manufacturing was done in China and I know that allot of Local Australian Manufacturing has gone. My label will consist of Babywear and Childrenswear.

Does anybody have any info on Australian manufacturers/Factories that can still produce clothing both woven and Jerseywear in Australia. I would be grateful for as many contacts as possible and I am keen for my label to be Australian made.

Nice to hear from you. I can't give you a manufacturer but I might have a contact for you from your field of work. She's also into childrenwear made in Australia.
I also have a good friend with your fashion background, she's now designing shoes but might have some ideas for you. She's a bit snowed under at the moment but if you send me your details by mail I can forward that to her.

I have forwarded your details to the 2 girls - my shoe friend already told me that she doesn't know anyone here in Australia, hopefully there is a better response from the other one.

I would also recommend that you post this again (or ask admin if they could move your posting) to a different area in the forums - it's hard to find and might be better located at eg 'working smarter'

I am getting ready to start up a retail store in NSW exclusivly for children's clothes. My store will be high-end in and creative in appearance (as I am an architect and my wife artistic) with a very reasonable price point so consumers will have more choice of a high quality product. I would check out Skout Trade Fair www.skouttradefair.com.au - it is an online trade fair for members of the baby and childrens industry.

Unfortunately, manufacturing in Australia makes it very difficult to keep your pricing competitive.

There is an Australian Manufacturer in Sydney specialising in Certified Australian Organic Cotton teeshirts (swear shop free) but also sells his material to manuacturers. You could perhaps speak to them at certton.com.au

Hi Patty,
Congrats on the new venture. Manufacturing in Australia is very difficult, but quite ok for small startups. I always say baby steps. The Australian Textile industry produces a handbook annually, its my bible. They also have a weekly enewsletter. The newsletter will keep you informed of grants etc and the "Bible" will give you all the manufacturing & sourcing contacts for everything and anybody in the industry. I'll email you the link.
Fiji should be considered an option as they like doing small runs and with Austrade's help you can get a government subsidy due to the free trade agreement.
With children's clothing it's imperative that you use AZO free fabrics & threads due to the standard laws within Australia and Europe. If fabric is coming from china, demand to see the certificates.
Outsourcing splices of the garments to experienced outworkers can be a problem solver if the cost is too high initially to go to an australian manufacturing company.We use a few as well as in house production staff.
Try your local Tafes, that run a textiles design,industrial sewing machining or apparel making course. I know one company that has their garments going to prisons to be manufactured.
