Just be aware you CAN do this mindmapping thing without a computer. The highest technology it really needs to get a preeety good result is nothing more than a pencil, piece of paper and a rubber - and thinking time of course!

Consider it as list writing on steroids!!!

Ha ha! How did you work me out so well from the other side of the country Judd?

Give me a few days to play around with all these options and I will gladly add my two cents worth. For now, I'm just grateful to Paul (Peppie) and the gang for helping me to short-cut the research process. And it's quite possible that I will end up reverting to the olde worlde pencil'n'paper method too.

Thanks all! Love your work =)
Jayne

I've been pencil and paper mind mapper for years. recently gave Creately.com a go because I was wanted to get a pretty complex mind map on one page, it was fiddly though

For brainstorming, I just came across Speed Thinking which has built in procrastination avoidance. There is an online tool, but pencil and paper will do the job too. For a quick intro see http://www.slideshare.net/speedthink...hinking-e-book

I find pencil and paper can be both a very good way of emptying ones mind onto paper, sort of a case of spewing the brain congestion out through your hand, AND/OR it can also be a very good procrastination avoider or even procrastination creator. It entirely depends on just how you approach the process of the time. BTW, a rubber is an essential undo/modification tool.

I am a bit of a chronic list writer from way back and a mindmap is just fantastic compared to 2D lists. For some people who suffer from depression and anxiety, list writing can be a good way to manage life and everything.

My only problem with computer based mindmapping is finding the time and inclination to get into it. Must check where that is on my list, in fact I must check which list that IS on!!!

I love Freemind.

I used it on Ubuntu & now windows.

I use it for work & personal use; I link to other mindmaps, I embed pictures, tables, link to google docs.

It helps me keep track of different activities & a point of reference at an activity completed. I started off with the minor features but as I got use to it, I dived further in what it can do, in particular shortcut keys so as not to interrupt my line of thought (especially when it doesn't stay on the same track...).

I export to PDF or xml depending on who I want to read it. I can print off by using multiple pages to keep a big picture of the map.

Best thing is that it's always improving & it's free.

Mindjet has a better integration with Microsoft office products but you pay the price.

I also use pen & paper, in particular in meetings but I generally either scan or copy the data into freemind again so I can use it to refer back to easily.

Sorry I left it this long for my first post....
