I love Freemind.
I used it on Ubuntu & now windows.
I use it for work & personal use; I link to other mindmaps, I embed pictures, tables, link to google docs.
It helps me keep track of different activities & a point of reference at an activity completed. I started off with the minor features but as I got use to it, I dived further in what it can do, in particular shortcut keys so as not to interrupt my line of thought (especially when it doesn't stay on the same track...).
I export to PDF or xml depending on who I want to read it. I can print off by using multiple pages to keep a big picture of the map.
Best thing is that it's always improving & it's free.
Mindjet has a better integration with Microsoft office products but you pay the price.
I also use pen & paper, in particular in meetings but I generally either scan or copy the data into freemind again so I can use it to refer back to easily.
