Freedom of Information changes

Wednesday 03 November 2010

Changes to the Freedom of Information Act 1982 mean that you can access government information more easily, in a move to increase government disclosure and transparency.

If you do business with government as a contract service provider and deliver services to the public on behalf of a government agency, a Freedom of Information (FIO) request may extend to documents held by your business.

Other key changes include:

  • public access to information promptly and at the lowest reasonable cost
  • the appointment of the Australian Information Commissioner, Freedom of Information Commissioner and establishment of the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner
  • introduction of an FOI access review process, through either the agency or the Information commissioner.

Read more about the changes on the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner website.
