Have there been times in your life when you’ve felt low and haven’t been able to shake it, no matter which of your standard coping strategies you utilise?

When an unshakeable low hits it can be a frightening experience for a solopreneur because the success, prosperity and growth of your business often depends solely in you. 

If you’re the only person who works in and on your business, how will you achieve your business goals if you’re not firing on all levels? Could your lack of productivity have a major impact on your success over the long term? 

Picking up your spirits is essential for the long-term success of your business, but more importantly, for your personal wellbeing. So what coping strategies do you use when you’re faced with a low that seems ongoing, and are starting to fear that if you can’t shake it off soon it will have a negative impact on your business success? 

The first step is be willing to accept that your current methods of helping yourself are just not working as efficiently or as effectively as they may have done in the past. 

The second step is to open your mind to a source of help that will actually help alleviate this ongoing low, no matter form that help takes. 

Next, be willing to accept that if your ongoing low has shifted from being ‘just the blues’ to a more serious case of depression, then getting help for your depression needs to be your top priority if you’re to get well and see your business return to its normal flourishing state. 

If you suspect that you’re affected by depression (or if someone close to you is worried about you), it’s important that you talk to your doctor. They’ll be able help you understand what’s going on, and if necessary, suggest appropriate treatment, help and support. You’ll also find plenty of resources and information at Beyond Blue – the national depression initiative
