How to make the most of May: Time to indulge yourself

May is a great time to indulge ourselves. I don’t mean we should merely plan a sleep in, a night out or a massage. Nor do I mean we should go silly and upgrade our Windows software or buy a better desk chair.

Instead, I'd like you to do something truly indulgent.

That said, May is a perfectly great time to do any of the above, or all of it.

Here's why us soloists deserve true indulgence.

We educate and motivate ourselves, are solely responsible for new business development, turnover, profit, quality assurance, service delivery, OH and S, HR, PR, IT, sales, marketing, payroll, tax planning, superannuation building, office and equipment maintenance, insurances and making sure there is paper in the printer.

May is a great time to remind ourselves why we fly solo and to indulge yourself accordingly.

We’re 11 months into the financial year. We know how much money is in the coffers so all we need to do is think about what we regard as an indulgence.

What would really do it for us?

A spa holiday or an adventure trek? A Rolex or a Chopard? A Ducattti or a Daimler? A first edition book or an entire series of a favourite TV show on DVD?

A boat, flying lessons, anything by Hermes?

Every month we risk everything we have – our businesses, our reputations, our ability to keep going – in pursuit of our soloist ideals.

We eschew regular salaries, company cars, corporate travel and share deals. Our rewards are the return on our toil.

Actually, I lost concentration writing this for a minute. I was still re-reading in my mind the menu of indulgences I listed above and asking myself the big question. What would really do it for me?

It reminded me that one of the best bits of indulging ourselves is the salivating about it. What type of holiday or what brand of timepiece are not really life’s big questions and as I constantly tell my children, I am sure there are people in the world with bigger problems than that.

But it is that sort of thinking that prevents us from indulging ourselves in the first place. It is absolutely okay to want treats and absolutely okay to buy them and enjoy them.

Holidays are already a given for me, a scheduled and budgeted for priority – with my kids while they are still kids and time out to rest my brain (these often involve palm trees and margaritas).

May is a great time to indulge yourself. No one else can or will do it for us.

We deserve it.
