How to make the most of February

For many soloists, February is the time when things kick off in earnest. People, including me, have dusted the sand off their feet, got their kids back to school, tradespeople and factory workers have returned after the annual shutdown and we’re into it.

01 Feb 07 | Karen Morath

We have filled in all of the blank pages of our new diaries for the year, read the motivational books over the Christmas break (or put our feet up and done as little as possible) and we are ready to start again on our soloist journey.

Here are some ideas on how to make the most of February:

February is a great time to...

1. Keep in touch

1. Re-establish contact with people for the first time since they received our Christmas card and to set up the working relationships that will define the year.

2. Do it 'our way'

Choose to favour the type of work and the profile of clients we always mean to focus on before things get busy and we get into the habit of just responding to the requests that come to us. Don't think "What if there’s no work around next month?" Instead, think "I really should just do this. Because I can."

3. Reinvent yourself

Now's a good time to reposition ourselves and our businesses, to treat a new year as a new skin and relaunch our business to our preferred market as if our business was brand new.

4. Think positively

Get an early sense of how we will answer the "How’s business?" question all year. Patterns form early so it makes sense to create one that we like.

5. Stay the course

Maintain January’s rested and healthy glow and maintain the resolutions we made just over a month ago. We said how many alcohol free days? We said we’d exercise how many times a week? Whatever we said, if we keep it up another month, we can only be better off.

Because we’re flying solo, we really can schedule three walks a week at 5pm or 9am or whenever we meet the least biological resistance. We really can live more balanced lives, at least in part. Isn’t that why we’re doing it this way?

February is a great time to benefit from the holidayed and refreshed mindsets of our clients. While they’ve been having a downtime or a slow time, they too have been thinking about making changes to their businesses or their departments or companies. Changes that could include new thinking, new suppliers, new partners. Us.

So February is when all the fun stuff happens. When we get to put the previous year behind us and get stuck into the new one. And put our plans in place to enable us to be and work as we have always imagined.
