5 ideas for hacking your way to more social media love

Struggling to grow your social media followers? Try these simple tricks to boost your social media profile and get better social media marketing results without extra time or effort.

Social media marketing has assumed a place at the top of the list of effective marketing strategies for lifestyle businesses in recent years. Straightforward, low cost and very easy to use, social media can take your business to the next level with a few simple-to-use techniques and a consistent strategy.

Unfortunately, for those of you trying to get a foothold on the social media ladder, there is now a lot of competition. For many businesses, social media marketing strategy largely involves fighting for attention. If you’re not getting the social media love you need, shouting louder isn’t necessarily going to be the answer, especially when you’re up against organisations with much bigger marketing budgets and/or an entire marketing department.

Over the years, I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s better to work smarter rather than harder on social media so I thought I would share a few hacks that I use with my clients to help them get more social media love without having to expend huge amounts of time or money.

1. Pay attention to your title

You may have heard this already, but a great title will make the difference between whether your content gets clicked on or ignored. Improving your titles can be an instant social media fix and it’s very simple to do. If you’re linking to a piece of content like a blog post on social media you can either post the title of the content on social media or you can create a specific social media headline. Whatever you decide to do, I always recommend that headlines are short, to the point and include a superlative or some word that can evoke emotion.

2. Use great imagery

When you are trying to attract attention on social media, great images are essential for a few reasons. Humans are visual creatures and we react more instantly to images than we do to written content. As well as this, some social media platforms give favourable treatment to posts that have images or that are visual in nature. If you’re struggling to come up with images you can always try using Canva – a free platform that lets you create social media banners and images with minimal design skills.

3. Use hashtags

If you’re not using hashtags in your social media posts, or you’re scratching your head wondering what those weird symbols are on Twitter, you’re missing out. Hashtags are a fast and dirty way to improve the visibility of your social media posts and once you get the hang of them they are very easy to use.

Take a look around at other social media profiles in your industry to see how they are using hashtags and make a note of which hashtags are the most popular. Most industries have a few specific hashtags that people use to find information and updates. If you can include those on your posts with relevant content you will increase your following much faster than if you don’t.

4. Change your post times

Do you post at the same time each day or do you, like many of us, squeeze in a quick post whenever you have a spare few minutes whether it’s 10pm on a Sunday night or 11am on a Tuesday morning? How frequently you post along with the time of day you post can make a startling difference to your overall results.

Try experimenting with different times of day for posting (scheduling tools like Buffer allow you to schedule posts so you can post at time where you’re not on your computer).

If you usually post in the evening try posting at 8am when people will be checking their social media feeds on the morning commute. And vice versa. Experiment, experiment, experiment!

5. Look at your analytics

Your analytics can give you a great insight into quick tweaks you can make to change your social media results. Are people engaging with your posts? Which posts are the most popular?

When you track your analytics for a period of time you will start to see patterns around what works and what doesn’t. This lets you focus on doing more of the things your followers love and less of the things that they don’t.

Getting better results from your social media marketing doesn’t have to be hard work. With a few sneaky hacks you can get more social media love and grow your following no matter which platform you decide to use.
