Soloist in the Spotlight, Greg Masters

Location

Sydney, Australia

Occupation

Director of Nexus Management Consulting. We help organisations solve complex problems. The fact that we cause lots of them is beside the point.

If your office caught fire, what would you grab first…?

My iPod.

…and what would you toss into the flames?

My printers- the ones I haven’t already thrown out of the window.

Do you have a designated ‘work’ wardrobe?

Consultant black, predictably, and no ties.

When meeting someone, would you rather they thought you were charming or mysterious?

Are they mutually exclusive? I’d like to be considered both, along with about five other equally unlikely attributes.

What book are you reading?

Carl Hiaasen’s Skinny Dip. I know I’m supposed to say something like “I always read Dostoevsky when winter sets in.”

What’s the best piece of business advice you’ve ever been given?

There were two best pieces of advice 1. Never appear as a guest on someone else’s website. 2 When you appear on someone else’s website, don’t include a picture. I’m not good at taking advice.

Can you stop at one chocolate biscuit/savoury snack?

Yep, chocolate, no problem. Other things, big problem.

If you could improve one thing about your work, what would it be?

The job title. After 9 years, I still feel uncomfortable saying ‘I’m a consultant’. That’s probably because most people laugh when I do.

What website do you visit every day?

www.allmusic.com. It lists and reviews every single album ever made across every single genre. Even trip hop. An indispensable resource.

What actor/actress would play the lead in the story of your life?

The young Jack Nicholson turned down the role so I’ll have to plump for Kevin Bacon. He’s a great networker. I can’t see any actress rising to the challenge. Even Meryl would stuff up the Aussie accent again.

You’ve got a free half hour during your work day. What do you do?

Whack the iPod on and go for a good coffee.

What’s your proudest moment?

I haven’t peaked yet. I’m still working on it.
