We ask the tough questions
You’ve got a free half hour during your work day. What do you do?
If the weather allows it, I'll hop over the balcony and have a nice walk on the beach to clear my mind and get some exercise done. My office is literally on the beach, which is definitely one of the perks of coming in to work. If the weather is off, you'll find me eating my sandwich at my desk, while doing what I love - working on SEO strategies for my clients.
Would you describe yourself as a technophobe or technophile?
I've always been intrigued by shiny new toys, and I think I have owned nearly all of Apple's products at one stage. I'm the go-to guy for friends and family when it comes to technical issues, whether it's explaining to my mother-in-law for the sixtieth time how she can send text messages from her phone (I'm patient like that!), helping my friends secure their wireless network, or assisting clients out with all sorts of IT problems. I was a UNIX systems admin, a network admin, and a storage analyst in a previous career. So yes, I think technophile is the box to check for this question.
Who, or what, is your biggest inspiration?
Someone who I only met 17 months ago. My beautiful baby daughter, who means more than the world to me. Everything I do these days seems to be for her, and I can't help but love every minute of it. I want to make sure that I provide her with the best possible start in life, and will stop at nothing to achieve that goal.
What’s your favourite film, book and album?
Books: 1984 by George Orwell, Life of Pi by Yann Martel
Album: Mama Said by Lenny Kravitz
What’s the smartest bit of marketing you’ve ever done?
Several years ago, I ran a popular "make money online" blog which was created as a parody on one of that niche's most recognised names, John Chow. I got up to all sorts of fun and games in order to promote my blog. For example, at one stage, three top bloggers (Darren Rowse of Problogger, Jeremy Schoemaker of Shoemoney, and John Chow himself) all became dads in a very short period of time. I got a cute design created with a big cow, which said "I heart John Cow" and had it printed on baby t-shirts and bibs. I sent them to the three bloggers and they each wrote special "thank you" posts which led to a lot of new followers for me. I was pretty happy with the results of that small marketing campaign.
What’s the one resource you’d never be without?
The Internet. Since hopping online way back in 1997 I have learned an incredible amount of things that interest me. I was, and still am, one of those people who never really cared for the set curriculum at school, simply because there was too much stuff that I was not interested in. The things I wanted to learn more about all became available online, and I'm grateful every day for the opportunities I got from working online. It enabled me to break the mould and live my life the way I want to live it.
What’s the most enjoyable element of your work? And the least enjoyable?
What book are you reading?
Flying Solo: How to go it alone in business (no, I'm not making this up!)
If you could pick anyone to be your personal assistant, who would it be and why?
Probably myself. Simply because that would mean I didn't have to spend time on trying to convey my train of thought and ideas to someone with different views and opinions.
How would you describe yourself in three adjectives?
Intelligent, passionate, analytical.
How did your school report describe you (in three words)?
Intelligent, disruptive, know-it-all.
Do you subscribe to any magazines or newspapers?
I've got a digital subscription to Wired magazine on my iPad.
What do you do? Who for? And how does it benefit them?
Visible is a boutique online marketing company in Perth. We focus on SEO, PPC & CRO mainly because we know that these three core services will give our clients the best ROI from their websites.
