We ask the tough questions

You’ve got a free half hour during your work day. What do you do?

I’d love to say I grab a cup of coffee and fire up a video game, but alas, that’s not the case! I spend any spare time updating social media and tweaking my own website with new content, or working on SEO.

Would you describe yourself as a technophobe or technophile?

I am a geek, nerd, tech head – definitely NOT a technophobe! Because technology is ever evolving there is always something new to learn, and I really enjoy learning to use new software and gadgets.

Who, or what, is your biggest inspiration?

I really admire Richard Branson but I’m guessing readers have heard his name a million times before. So more in line with my own business, I have to say Laura Roeder is a great inspiration to me. Laura recreated her business from being a website designer to becoming a social media expert. I only wish Laura was based in Australia so I could go to her events live.

What's the biggest thing you've learnt this year?

This year has been my biggest learning curve by far! I’ve learnt you have to let yourself make mistakes, learn from them, and move on. I’ve tried a couple of things this year that just didn’t work out, and rather than letting myself slump into some sort of self absorbed depression, I dusted myself off and moved on. I re-branded myself, going from ScreenCast Chic to Ace Video Marketing as I realised I wasn’t quite hitting my target market. While I lost a whole lot of time, and a little money, it’s totally okay. No use holding onto something if it doesn’t work for you.

What’s your number one stress relief tactic (keep it clean!)?

Losing myself in a good book. And I mean fiction, not a business book. While I love reading inspirational business books I find they get my mind spinning and are not conducive to relaxation! I’m a bookworm (comes from growing up without a TV for the first eight years of my life) and love a great sci-fi or supernatural tale.

What’s the smartest bit of marketing you’ve ever done?

Creating online video of course! You’ve heard the saying “A pictures worth a thousand words” – well it’s tenfold for video. It’s such an exciting time with internet marketing, you have so many options available and creating a video isn’t the overwhelming and difficult task it once was.

What’s the most enjoyable element of your work? And the least enjoyable?

Most enjoyable: The creation process. Pulling together all the elements to produce an awesome video – that includes live video footage, choosing images, creating slides, and one of my favourite parts is choosing the music backing track. Then producing it out to the finished product, it’s such a great sense of achievement.

Least enjoyable: Filing. I put it off until my tray is overflowing and things are starting to stack up around me and my cat is knocking things off onto the floor…then I know it’s time to get the filing done.

What’s the best piece of business advice you’ve ever been given?

That I don’t need to be a perfectionist. Don’t wait until your website is absolutely perfect, just launch it and make changes as you go. Start writing your content, articles and blog posts, you don’t have to be a copywriter and you don’t have to be perfect – you just need to be you.

What would be your advice to aspiring soloists?

Don’t give up. Everyone has bad days, don’t let the negative voices in your head win. Also, have some support, whether it’s a business coach or networking buddies and other small business owners or entrepreneurs. It’s not easy going it alone, and you don’t have to.

And now comes the plug!

What do you do? Who for? And how does it benefit them?

I’m an online video producer who is passionate about small business internet marketing. I make videos for entrepreneurs and small business owners to help drive traffic to their website and showcase themselves and their products in a unique way.
