We ask the tough questions
What’s the one resource you’d never be without?
I'm a self-confessed Apple fanatic, so my iPhone is by my side constantly. As a director and digital marketing consultant, I'm always on the road meeting customers, so my iPhone enables me to keep in contact with people. I couldn't be without it!
You’ve got a free half hour during your work day. What do you do?
I would most likely head to the gym, or go for a run with some friends around Sydney Harbour. It's important to me to keep active physically and socially.
Would you describe yourself as a technophobe or technophile?
Without a doubt a technophile. I'm a total computer geek and internet nerd – I guess you have to be, working in the digital marketing business! I remember coding websites and optimising them for search engines such as Altavista back in the days of Netscape and 486 CPUs. How things have changed...
Who, or what, is your biggest inspiration?
Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak of Apple. They introduced contemporary design to an industry that previously consisted of grey blocks and cabling. Their principle of leading through design is how we like to think of ONMedia in the digital marketing arena.
Do you have a party trick/hidden talent?
I have a medical degree if that counts? I also have a recreational pilot's licence, which is something that I am extremely passionate about and love to do in my spare time. Oh, and I can speak Japanese, quite badly though.
What website do you visit every day?
Flying Solo of course! I feel strongly about supporting and encouraging small and micro business in Australia through collaboration and communitiy. Oh yeah, and Google, obviously. Hundreds of times per day.
What inspires you most about your work?
Seeing our customers achieve great success online. There is no better inspiration for us than seeing our clients do well. It keeps us going.
If your office caught fire, what would you grab first? What would you toss into the flames?
I would grab photographs of family and friends from my desk first, and throw the old office file server (an ancient Dell model) into the flames. We need a new one.
What’s the cheapest, most effective bit of marketing you’ve ever done?
Organic search engine optimisation (SEO) and social media marketing (SMM), without a shadow of a doubt. The return on investment is insane. Just imagine the power of putting your brand and your website in front of millions of people?
What's the best bit of feedback you've ever had?
One customer once commented that we were "professional and approachable digital gurus who have worked wonders for his business". This echoes why we went into business in the first place, and keeps us working hard for clients.
What do you love most about running your own business?
I love being able to do what I love the most in the world. If you are considering going into business, make sure it is something that you have a passion and flair for, and the enthusiasm will drive your success.
What would be your advice to aspiring soloists?
To be aware that firms such as ourselves exist and are here to help. We have been doing this for a long time, and understand that small businesses can be scared off by the complexity and taboo surrounding online marketing. Get in touch, we are approachable and friendly people and can help your business flourish online.
And now comes the plug!
What do you do? Who for? And how does it benefit them?
I am the director and consultant for ONMedia, a Sydney based digital marketing firm providing Sydney SEO. We help companies develop a powerful brand and succeed online through web design, search engine optimisation (SEO) and social media marketing.
