We ask the tough questions
What's the biggest thing you've learnt this year?
That the carbon tax is making everyone scared to spend.
What’s your proudest moment?
Other than the day my kids were born and I saw they have the right amount of fingers and toes, I'd say the day I left the Commonwealth Bank and started this business with no money in the bank.
What’s the smartest bit of marketing you’ve ever done?
Signwriting our seven vehicles with our business name on it.
What’s the most obscure business request you’ve ever had?
We were asked to supply a jumping castle to be placed on a barge in the middle of the harbour for a marketing event and they were to have models in sexy lingerie bouncing on it. I have never had so many staff wanting to set up a job.
What’s the most enjoyable element of your work? And the least enjoyable?
Most Enjoyable: We have fun every day as we are in a fun business. We get to test (read play) on every new jumping castle or giant water slide that we import and my staff are simply a pleasure to work with. Last summer on one of the hottest days of the year we had to test Australia’s largest inflatable water slide that stands two-stories high and we had a blast, albeit a bit wet afterwards.
Least Enjoyable: Keeping our marketing effective on a shoestring budget.
What’s the cheapest, most effective bit of marketing you’ve ever done?
Our inflatables and entertainers sell themselves when we are at events.
What’s the best thing about being a soloist? And the worst thing?
Best thing is the hours are flexible so I get to do things with my teenage kids when I want to. Worst thing is that as a single owner/boss you can’t really create work mates that you can go out with after work or on weekends.
What’s the best piece of business advice you’ve ever been given?
Start your own business before you are 40. I did and I have never looked back.
What music are you listening to at the moment?
I love music and found ADELE many years before she hit the big time, but my teenage daughter loves Justin Bieber and it is on all the time at home so I have grown to enjoy his music. Other than that my selection would be something more like James Blunt though.
What is the one regret you do not want to have in this lifetime?
To be broke in retirement.
What inspires you most about your work?
The amount of fun we have every single day. Our clients are excited when they book our products for their event or backyard party and we love it.
How did your school report describe you (in three words)?
Twohundredandtwentytwo ……. That was my score out of 500 in the HSC. Yes I failed my HSC but it didn’t stop me succeeding in life.
And now comes the plug!
What do you do? Who for? And how does it benefit them?
We provide entertainment and amusements for corporate events and private parties including jumping castles, mechanical bulls, sumo suits, large obstacle courses, giant water slides, bungee runs, arcade equipment, temporary tattoo artists and loads of entertainers such as Ministry of Sound DJs, roaming clowns and magicians.
