We ask the tough questions
You’ve got a free half hour during your work day. What do you do?
Hang out with my cat, Oscar. I always hope that if I entertain him for a while he’ll stop jumping all over my laptop. Hope is fading.
When meeting someone, would you rather they thought you were charming or mysterious? Why?
Charming. In my work people really need to trust me and know that I’m listening. So if they think I’m mysterious we’re not off to a good start.
What's the biggest thing you've learnt this year?
If they don’t pay, stop work!
What’s your proudest moment?
I think getting my first client. Starting from nothing in a new industry I was so happy that someone trusted me to help them.
What’s the smartest bit of marketing you’ve ever done?
A lot of networking – mine is a very personal service in a niche area. But once people have met me they tend to remember what I do, and I’ll suddenly get a call saying “I need you!”
What or who has the most grounding influence on you?
My Dad, although he wouldn’t be aware of that! I get my values from him, and sometimes if I am tempted by a path that seems a little dodgy I think “would I be comfortable explaining that one to Dad?” If the answer is no I don’t do it.
What’s the biggest challenge you face at work?
Getting out to reach and educate enough people about what I do, while having enough time to actually do the work and have a life.
What would be your advice to aspiring soloists?
Do it. Take a risk. Enjoy it, and be absolutely true to yourself.
What website do you visit every day?
Facebook.
What star sign are you? Do you believe in horoscopes?
I’m a Libra. I do a little – I am very balanced and tend to always be able to see both points of view. And Librans are known for being charming!
What do you love most about running your own business?
Flexibility, control, peace and quiet, no politics, afternoon naps, sense of satisfaction… the list goes on.
How would you describe yourself in three adjectives?
Warm, smart, considered.
And now comes the plug!
What do you do? Who for? And how does it benefit them?
I help business owners to articulate the value of their business through a business plan or information memorandum (IM). This helps them to raise finance from investors or lenders, or to achieve a higher price for their business on sale. Many business owners tear their hair out at the thought of writing a long professional document, and it’s a relief to hand the task over to an expert.
