What’s your proudest moment?
Winning the Gold Medal for Australia in the 2010 National WorldSkills Competition. I represented Victoria in the graphic/web design category.
What music are you listening to at the moment?
Sounds of a Playground Fading by In Flames. It's great to listen to a band that has kept true to their original style and haven't been pressured into going mainstream.
What’s the most enjoyable element of your work? And the least enjoyable?
Most Enjoyable: I really enjoy meeting other small business owners. It's nice to meet people who have similar ambitions to mine.
Least Enjoyable: Bookkeeping.
What’s the cheapest, most effective bit of marketing you’ve ever done?
Simply visiting other businesses and asking if they would like any work done on their website. People can see I am genuine, and we have the chance to discuss their needs face to face.
What’s the biggest challenge you face at work?
Knowing when to turn off the computer and stop working. It's actually embarrassing the amount of times I've been asked what my actual hours are.
What do you love most about running your own business?
I love the challenge and responsibility. Creating new marketing campaigns, new designs, thinking up new ideas and being able to see the results is very fulfilling. It's the main source of my motivation.
What is the one regret you do not want to have in this lifetime?
Not helping the people I love to the best of my ability.
Do you prefer crosswords, logic puzzles or neither?
I'd have to say neither. When you're in an industry where a misplaced semi-colon can bring down an entire website, sometimes you just need a break from the puzzles!
What’s one habit you’d like to change?
Constantly clicking through to related links on websites. The internet is a great tool, but the hours just fly by.
What would be your advice to aspiring soloists?
Go for it and stick with it. Things can get hard at times, but getting through it gives you a great sense of accomplishment.
What’s your number one stress relief tactic (keep it clean!)?
Jumping on a mountain bike and barrelling down a mountain. It's great to get out of the office and keep fit.
